NO KITTY GENOVESE FOR YOU

Would an Oregonian save Kitty Genovese? A few years back a little boy in Portland, Oregon was accidentally left on a train platform. He made it home safely with his dad. A young woman stayed with him until his father returned, just a bystander who saw what happened and took time to care. Those few minutes ended happily; it […]

PUBLIC GOOD IS GOOD ENOUGH?

The idea of doing something for the ‘public good’ is a high standard in America. Why? Because the public, of which we’re all a part, is so broad. What’s good in one place is not so good in another, but no one talks about the ‘public bad’ as a goal. Or do they?

FAMILY TREE BRANCH OF RICHARDSONS

As people age up and out they look for meaning in different places. Where some look to DNA, others shake the family tree. That’s what my Grandma did years ago. This is what dropped out:

LIFE AND DEATH IN BOOMER PORTLAND

Reposted from 2013: Let’s face it, if you’re a baby boomer your life is over. Done. The problem is no one told you, but you’ve heard things. THE HEART OF PORTLAND

Repost from 2012 Urban life grows more imposing the closer you get to Burnside. The pretty lights you see from I-5, the beautiful reflection off the Willamette, disappear once you park your car. Trade wheels on the road for shoes on the sidewalk and the pace slows enough for a good look around. You still […]

ONE NURSE STORY

If there’s a typical nurse story, it sounds like this: “I like to help people, and I don’t get grossed out.” A typical nursing patient has a similar story: “I need help, and I am grossed out.” Why are we grossed out about our bodies? I’ll start:

FOR THOSE GIVING AND FOLLOWING ORDERS

Was it a treat to see an ocean of men and women trained in giving and following orders all in the same place? It was for me. These people are all Hall of Fame worthy, and already enshrined in my personal hall. While most of us packed our gear and went home after two, three, […]

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING WITH WOLVES

There comes a time in high school wrestling when you get thrown to the wolves. Ok, not real wolves, just the first time you knew you were over-matched, going to get rag-dolled, and still went out there. It doesn’t always work out the way it’s expected. I was a second year wrestler slated to face […]

OLD MAN ADVICE FOR YOUTHS

I saw an old man on a video giving advice, old man advice. How old? Too old to climb a redwood. He was giving advice to those younger than him, which is about everyone. He wasn’t a baby boomer, and if he was he had lots of wear and tear. The advice?
