DECISION MAKERS PICK A SIDE

Decision makers have one job: make the right decision.

Then another and another and another all day long.

It’s not for everybody, but everybody does it.

Making no decision is a decision?

Yes, but someone else will decide for you if it’s important enough.

I have a door in my house with a quirky lock and deadbolt, quirky meaning worn out.

The lock in the handle takes about five tries to work, the deadbolt about ten.

It’s like a combination lock that opens if you do it just right.

If it’s the original it’s over thirty years old.

As if a door handle and deadbolt can’t last thirty years?

I’ve never had a problem with it until . . . I did.

The combination didn’t work the first twenty times, then did, and that was it.

$32 for a Quick Set combo later and it all works like new. Why?

I was forced to decide, and I’m glad.

I should have done it a decade earlier, but I’ve been busy.

Busy?

Seriously, I wanted to milk the lock as long as I could to keep my belief alive: Locks last longer than thirty years.

Not that one.

I. Was. Wrong.

 

An Informed Decision

President Calvin Coolidge once said,

“If you don’t say anything, you won’t be called on to repeat it.

 

For a man nicknamed Silent Cal, he had a good scroll of quotes.

 

No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.

 

If you owned a business, or rented property, and someone with the resume in the top image of this section was a candidate for a job opening, or a work space, how would you react?

If you were a team of decision makers, which way would you go?

Don’t say it depends on the job.

On the face of it, this resume says the person associated with it might be a risk.

Take away half the number results of each line and they’re still risky.

Let’s say you want them to run your company, or represent you in court. Babysit your kids?

Based on their record of achievement, they disqualify themselves at every turn.

What would you hire them to do if they showed up in their late seventies, took a nap during the interview, and rambled on and on when you asked for clarification on any of the resume lines.

 

People make airline reservations for me. I just get on the plane.

You plead the fifth so you have a chance to give the right answer.

The only fair felony convictions I see are for the judges.

Criminal charges are all over the place, like jay-walking.

Sometimes assault allegations are a simple difference of opinion.

Bankruptcies, seriously? Bankruptcies are just a hiccup in cashflow.

The stuff with the draft? A long, long, time ago. But I was ready if they called one more time.

 

Cal: We draw our Presidents from the people. It is a wholesome thing for them to return to the people. I came from them. I wish to be one of them again.

 

Who are the people ready to welcome back the man as one of their own?

Will they? Or, will enough finally be enough. So far no one knows how much is enough.

Men and women and mothers and daughters will eventually decide one way or the other.

One side would be returning to the kind of resort-life they never left, with golf and buffets all day long.

The other side would be more supervised, a small room, and food from a limited menu.

Decision makers will study and work themselves into a sweat as to which way is best.

For them.

Stop lagging and delaying on writing projects.
