EXQUISITE CREATURES, OR JUST MY FAMILY

Exquisite Creatures is in the final days of its second run at OMSI. Christopher Marley’s nature collection occupies two floors. In one word, it’s an incredible experience made more so by who I saw it with: Wife, kid, daughter in-law, and a four year old. But not just any four year old, which I’ll get […]

MUSIC MUSCLES vs OTHER MUSCLES

Music muscles don’t show until you play that guitar. The only thing that shows until then are the fingertip callouses on your fret hand and maybe a callous on your thumb if you don’t use a pick. Your head doesn’t get lumpy with muscle, but the muscle memory is in there if you practice. But […]

ACCEPTABLE LOSSES WITH EXCEPTIONS

Acceptable losses come with a line. Whether losses are acceptable or not usually depends on which side of the line you’re on. If friends and family are on one side, and you’re not? Either they’re on the loss side, or it’s you. Then what? Since I’ve been around a while, here’s a few ideas:

CHEAT DAY TO EAT ANYTHING? ANYTHING?

HAPPINESS PURSUIT FOR THE SLOW

Happiness pursuit is a good idea. It covers a lot of ground, this happy idea. If you do no harm in pursuit, then you’re doing it right. ‘First do no harm,’ is more than a suggestion. Happiness and harm are not synonyms.

MEETING EXPECTATIONS, GREAT AND OTHERWISE

Meeting expectations is not the same as meeting a stranger. You can’t not meet your own expectations. Not when you have standards and goals. What about meeting your dog’s expectations? Good luck with that.

OREGON BEACH PEOPLE FOR A DAY, MAYBE TWO

An Oregon beach isn’t for everyone, especially a winter beach. But somehow people show up. They show up bundled, water-proofed, and ready to go. But to where?

PACE YOURSELF FOR BEST RESULTS

“Pace yourself.” That’s what you tell yourself the first time you quit something from exhaustion. It’s what you say before the next time you start the thing that made you quit. You might have to quit again, but at least you’ll be better prepared. Not everything works out the first time you try. For example:

STEWARD FOR LIFE? BE ONE

A steward for life is one who leaves things better than they found them. Is it too much to ask? Maybe it’s just something old people think of? Quick reminder: you get older faster than you think you will, so . . .
