TAKE STRENGTH FROM YOUR COGNITION POWER

Take strength from knowing who you are. If you don’t know, or feel unsure, spend some time to think about it. But don’t be disappointed if you’re wrong. Things change, you change, we all change. Besides, if you don’t already know who you really and truly are, who does?

VETERAN SKILLS ON VETERANS DAY

Veteran skills I like to explain to my wife: We hear everything, but we don’t respond to every little thing. Why? We’re saving up to respond to the big things better. Or, most likely we might be a little deaf and this is an excuse. What did she say?

TIME TELLS ON ALL OF US

Time tells, so why not make it good story? “Go to sleep for twenty years and wake up and tell everyone how great you could have been.” That’s a line from The Tender Bar. It’s a good line, maybe the best in the movie.

VANITY PROJECT, OR INSANITY GOALS

“Vanity project.” That was my answer to the question of, “Why do you write online?” Some answers included, ‘to be remembered, to share, to enlighten.’ It’s all vanity project with different goals.

HOBBY CHILDREN LEARN TO VOTE

Hobby children come from any family of four or less. If there weren’t a hobby it would be a family of eight or ten. But some parents can’t face the challenge. Like me, but I’m a hobby guy anyway, so the tag fits.

PORTLAND HOBBY FOR CITY SLICKERS

A Portland hobby is what suburban living turns into. “Let’s go downtown and take a spin around the river,” means one thing: Park in the garage near the Hawthorne Bridge, walk over to the Eastside promenade / Eastbank Esplanade, cross the Steel Bridge, and walk up Waterfront Park. The eastside walk puts a good light on […]

HOBBY BLOGGER EXPLAINS: WHY BOTHER WRITING?

Hobby blogger here, busy counting vanity metrics. Google analytics reports traffic from Seattle, not so much from Portland. West Coast readers show up more than any other region in the country. Call me a West Coast hobby blogger? I’ll take it, but . . .

GROWING HOPE ON FALLOW LAND

Growing hope is my hope. Why? Because I like hopeful people. They do things I might try to do, go places I might like to go. In my work life I choose hope. Family life? I choose hope. Here’s now to grow hope in what feels like barren land.

ELECTION GUIDE? VOTE LIKE FAMILY

Election guide 2022 sponsored by Phil Knight? Vote like Mr. Knight if you share common values. He’s a businessman, Oregon’s claim to membership in the billionaires club. And he’s competitive in how he sees money spent, so he’s working as an election guide? Unfortunately, his picks come with overweight baggage fees.

RUGGED INDIVIDUALISM vs COMPLIANCE AND LIFE FORCE

Rugged individualism: the life force that separates quitters from finishers. Ask one of them why they do hard things and expect a question in return: “Why not?” It’s a confidence builder, and role to model. Then there’s personal compliance, which shouldn’t be a problem, but . . .
