NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF NATURAL MEDICINE: THE DOCTORS ARE IN

From a distance the ribbon cutting for the National University Of Natural Medicine appeared as yet another civic event in Portland, Oregon.
Speakers spoke, ribbons cut, cheers all around.
It was all of that and so much more, like overcoming impossible odds.
And yet . . .

GREAT NEWS FROM MT. ANGEL AND JOHN ROSSI PODCAST

The great news from Mt. Angel comes via the John Rossi Podcast visit to Lou’s Kitchen.
The Kitchen is a big winner in Best of Willamette Valley 2026 claiming the Gold Medal for best all-round restaurant.
When I opened the door the place was packed and buzzing at noon.
One grilled chicken salad and an Arnold Palmer later we retired to the podcast studio to work on stuff and thangs.

THE PROPER PERSPECTIVE TO WRITING AN EVERYDAY BLOG

An everyday blog is just what it sounds like:
Every. Day.
Like most things worth pursuing, it takes tenacity and creativity to make something worth writing into something worth reading.
No problem, write. Right?
But, there’s more.

BEER BELLY, BEER GUT, THEN WHAT

I’m working on a beer belly reduction plan, which means what?
Drink less beer, what else?
I was lamenting my loss after meeting a new guy who fixed broken guitar amps in his garage.
Me: I think the signs are lining up to loose my gut.

BEING USEFUL LIKE ROBERT FULGHUM

This isn’t Robert Fulghum, it’s me being useful in my Robert Fulghum beard which has gone the way of every beard that dared show itself on my face.
He is probably a better beard steward than me. My enthusiasm for grooming an extra pet in the house lasts about six months.
The last dog lived sixteen years; the current dog is going on five.
Am I being useful for them? More than I am to a beard.

CDC SAYS OPIOIDS SHOULDN’T BE FIRST CHOICE? THAT HURTS.

Pain relief moves from legal heroin to physical therapy, exercise, and over the counter pills? Who knew? I wrote a post about an author’s reading called BLACK TAR HEROIN, SAM QUINONES, AND DREAMLAND. Sam Quinones showed up in Powell’s City of Books and talked about pill mills supplying zombie customers with their opioid prescriptions; about […]

Too Expensive For Boomer Exercise? Probably Not

Breaking Down The Numbers (approximate values) What to do about rising co-pays, premiums, and fees from the insurance and medical billing? First, make an appointment with a Naturopathic Doctor for a baseline health analysis. Find an ND you like. Here’s mine. Then find a gym.

HPV16 EXPLAINED BY WASHINGTON POST, HPVANDME.ORG

There’s no fake news about HPV16 explained in the Washington Post, even if you wish it weren’t true. A story headlined, “What men should know about cancer that spreads through oral sex,” ran April 2 this year. Impressive stuff to jump start Head, Neck, and Throat Cancer Week. What should they know? What […]

Prince in Portland, Prince Forever

Laying along East Burnside, Prince looked comfortable. We were going to a show at the Doug Fir Lounge and there he was. It took me back to the Tacoma Dome after seeing Purple Rain when it first came out. Who was Prince? Only the anti-Michael Jackson, and back then it seemed a good […]

LIFE LONG LEARNING STARTS EARLY

Baby Boomers do life long learning out of habit. What’s your excuse? Yes, I’m certified for leadership. At least that’s what the Fort Ord Leadership Academy says. What does a 21 Hour Leader Preparation Program do? In the wrong hands it turns a decent person into a tyrant. In the right hands it makes for […]

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, RIGHT OR WRONG

The wrong questions and answers still get the right words. All parents have heard questions from their kids that made them think they’ve both gone over the topic before. And they probably have, but that’s no excuse for ignoring any question from a kid. They want answers and you’re the answer man, the answer woman, […]

SHUT UP AND EAT: SOUTH PHILLY VIA SE PORTLAND

Geno’s or Pat’s? Or Shut Up And Eat? This cheesesteak. Or that cheesesteak. My readers know the value of cheesesteak. If I hear about a place from a reliable source, I’m there. Same for an unreliable source.

THE REAL WESTERN AMERICA OUT HERE IN OREGON

The real Western America isn’t Texas or California Readers around the world see the American west through movies. From John Wayne in his cowboy costume, to private eye Jack Nicholson in LA’s Chinatown, to policeman Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry franchise, they view the west through a distorted lens. Forget about the red rocks of Colorado, […]

BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN HUG FROM GROVE PARK INN

Or, How the Grove Park Inn cures your ills without pills. The Omni Grove Park Inn, GPI, comes packed with the sort of history that ties people to places through material anthropology. And it’s a clever knot. With an original main lodge dating from 1913 flanked by wings added in the ’80’s, the property sits […]
