NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF NATURAL MEDICINE: THE DOCTORS ARE IN

From a distance the ribbon cutting for the National University Of Natural Medicine appeared as yet another civic event in Portland, Oregon.
Speakers spoke, ribbons cut, cheers all around.
It was all of that and so much more, like overcoming impossible odds.
And yet . . .

GREAT NEWS FROM MT. ANGEL AND JOHN ROSSI PODCAST

The great news from Mt. Angel comes via the John Rossi Podcast visit to Lou’s Kitchen.
The Kitchen is a big winner in Best of Willamette Valley 2026 claiming the Gold Medal for best all-round restaurant.
When I opened the door the place was packed and buzzing at noon.
One grilled chicken salad and an Arnold Palmer later we retired to the podcast studio to work on stuff and thangs.

THE PROPER PERSPECTIVE TO WRITING AN EVERYDAY BLOG

An everyday blog is just what it sounds like:
Every. Day.
Like most things worth pursuing, it takes tenacity and creativity to make something worth writing into something worth reading.
No problem, write. Right?
But, there’s more.

BEER BELLY, BEER GUT, THEN WHAT

I’m working on a beer belly reduction plan, which means what?
Drink less beer, what else?
I was lamenting my loss after meeting a new guy who fixed broken guitar amps in his garage.
Me: I think the signs are lining up to loose my gut.

BEING USEFUL LIKE ROBERT FULGHUM

This isn’t Robert Fulghum, it’s me being useful in my Robert Fulghum beard which has gone the way of every beard that dared show itself on my face.
He is probably a better beard steward than me. My enthusiasm for grooming an extra pet in the house lasts about six months.
The last dog lived sixteen years; the current dog is going on five.
Am I being useful for them? More than I am to a beard.

THERAPEUTIC SWEARING, MEDICAL MARIJUANA, CANCER

Swearing, done in the right spirit, communicates so much more than long, drawn out, explanations. Besides, how often do you need the long version? I’ve investigated both swearing and medical marijuana and come to a few helpful conclusions for cancer patients. Instead of getting all macho and shocker, I’ve amended my profanity […]

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS, pt2: FAMILY TRAUMA

Illness defines family trauma over time and it’s exhausting. Remember the movie Ordinary People? The family dynamic wasn’t defined by illness, but death of a child. It didn’t go well for the emotional state of all. There’s was a sudden adjustment with a lifetime effect. Living with a pre-existing condition, or around others with pre-existing […]

PORTLAND STORY THEATER TELLS THE TALE AT WILLAMETTE WRITERS

Lawrence Howard and Lynne Duddy ran the first Willamette Writers meeting of 2018. For all the wishes for a Happy New Year still echoing, their presentation confirmed the idea.   I came in right as they started and found a seat in the back, the last seat open. I start every meeting with high […]

Talkin’ ‘Bout Our Regeneration Baby Boomer Anthem. Let’s get it straight from the start. If you’re reading this you probably didn’t die before you got old. I know, it’s a big surprise. SOCIOPATH GENERATION GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION?

Does an entire sociopath generation give a hoot about being called a sociopath generation?   Not when it comes from some GenX hack selling his new book.   I mean that in the nicest way, but sometimes it gets tiring hearing outsiders rag the home team, even if it fits the program of […]

A BOOMER FAMILY TREE GROWS CLOSE TO TOWN

BUT NOT TOO CLOSE. When people say it’s best to live close to the land, what do they mean? Call it the rural side of life. The closer the better. It’s a perspective fewer and fewer are blessed with. Country living shows you the cycles of life, the cycle of many lives, like a live […]

BOOMERS ON THE MOVE TO SOMEWHERE ELSE

Why Not To The Hometown? No one likes hearing classmate at a reunion say, “So glad I got out of here.” Hear it once and you want them out of there again. Hometowns aren’t prison to escape from. If you feel that way, it’s you, not the town. Maybe when we were in our late […]

PDX BRIDGES NEW & OLD

The new pedestrian bridge brings new views of Portland. The view of the freeway looking south. To find it from I-5 north, take the Ross Island Bridge exit and snake around. Park your car before you make the right turn to the Ross Island ramp and you can’t miss it.           […]

2 PROBLEMS WITH THIRD PARTY HOTEL BOOKING

Hotel booking in Los Angeles is easy. Fly in for sun and fun, then…   What’s not to love about an LA trip. You’ve got the weather, the beaches, the beach town. Don’t forget the palm trees. Palm tree lined streets just scream LA in a a touristy way. For the locals it’s […]
