DON’T CARE, OR CARE, THERE IS NO TRY

If you don’t care about something, stay off the soapbox. Save your big talk for something you care about, we’ll figure out the rest. Once you’ve been around the block a few times it gets easier to care than not care. Why, you ask?

SPORTS TALK: “SO WHAT? NOW WHAT”

“So what,” is sports talk when things take a turn for the worse. And keep getting worse. Then comes the, “Now what,” part. Do you ride it on down, or . . . ?

SOCIAL COMPETITION: WHERE’S THE SCOREBOARD?

Social competition follows a different set of rules than sports. Sports take preparation and executing a plan. Then there’s the scoreboard. It explains the difference between winners and losers with few questions.

JOB APPLICATION: IT NEVER ENDS, NOR SHOULD IT

An election is a job application. Win an election and you get the job. Lose an election? Then what? Nixon is a good example.

LOSER LESSONS FOR A LIFETIME OF HOPE

Loser lessons make good winners. The trick is finding context. The particular context is knowing you’re not a lifetime loser because of a few events that didn’t turn our your way. I’ve had a few, you’ve had a few. Anyone who says they haven’t had a few are only lying to themselves. Some loser lessons […]

COMPETITION QUESTIONS FOR THE NON-COMPETITIVE

Competition questions start before you realize there’s even a competition happening. One of my favorites: “Do you even lift, bro?” It’s usually asked by a mid-forties man in a workout costume. It’s completed by an undershirt that looks like something out of a lady’s drawer. When it’s a question asked by a guy with greased […]

WINNING MINDSET STARTS EARLY FOR WINNERS

A winning mindset starts before anything else. Get it locked in as soon as possible. I heard a variation on sports talk radio where a host and guest talked about professional athletes on losing teams. Big time pros never consider themselves losers; they’re good players on bad teams that don’t win. In other words, it’s […]

HOW SPORTS LIFE GUIDES REAL LIFE

Sports life not about winning and losing, but how you play the game? Real life says sports life isn’t an accurate reflection, that winning is the reason, the only reason, to do anything. People in the winning camp like to say winners do what losers won’t do. They’re not wrong, they just don’t know what […]

If Winners Rule By Winning, Everyone Else Is A Loser?

The safe answer for winners is, “Maybe.” Don’t we all consider ourselves winners at some point? We might say we don’t keep score, but we know the score. Like rec soccer for toddlers, they knew the score of their games even if the parents pretended not to. So why not just say, “screw it,” and […]

GRADING NOBEL PRIZES ON THE IMMIGRANT CURVE

American Nobel Prize winners ruin the immigrant curve. So far six Americans won Nobel Prizes in 2016. All are immigrants. Nor does this year’s success of immigrants to the US appear to be a one-off.  After analysing Nobel winners, Stuart Anderson, of the National Foundation for American Policy, found that immigrants have won 40 per […]
