NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF NATURAL MEDICINE: THE DOCTORS ARE IN

From a distance the ribbon cutting for the National University Of Natural Medicine appeared as yet another civic event in Portland, Oregon.
Speakers spoke, ribbons cut, cheers all around.
It was all of that and so much more, like overcoming impossible odds.
And yet . . .

GREAT NEWS FROM MT. ANGEL AND JOHN ROSSI PODCAST

The great news from Mt. Angel comes via the John Rossi Podcast visit to Lou’s Kitchen.
The Kitchen is a big winner in Best of Willamette Valley 2026 claiming the Gold Medal for best all-round restaurant.
When I opened the door the place was packed and buzzing at noon.
One grilled chicken salad and an Arnold Palmer later we retired to the podcast studio to work on stuff and thangs.

THE PROPER PERSPECTIVE TO WRITING AN EVERYDAY BLOG

An everyday blog is just what it sounds like:
Every. Day.

BEER BELLY, BEER GUT, THEN WHAT

I’m working on a beer belly reduction plan, which means what?
Drink less beer, what else?
I was lamenting my loss after meeting a new guy who fixed broken guitar amps in his garage.
Me: I think the signs are lining up to loose my gut.

BEING USEFUL LIKE ROBERT FULGHUM

This isn’t Robert Fulghum, it’s me being useful in my Robert Fulghum beard which has gone the way of every beard that dared show itself on my face.
He is probably a better beard steward than me. My enthusiasm for grooming an extra pet in the house lasts about six months.
The last dog lived sixteen years; the current dog is going on five.

THERAPEUTIC SWEARING, MEDICAL MARIJUANA, CANCER

Swearing, done in the right spirit, communicates so much more than long, drawn out, explanations. Besides, how often do you need the long version? I’ve investigated both swearing and medical marijuana and come to a few helpful conclusions for cancer patients. Instead of getting all macho and shocker, I’ve amended my profanity […]

PRE-EXISTING CONDITION AFTER CANCER DIAGNOSIS

The day a cancer diagnosis becomes a pre-existing condition   Like we learn everyday when things change, everybody is different. What you do after a cancer diagnosis isn’t the same as someone else. PORTLAND HOLIDAY HURLING SEASON

Somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas you’ll find Portland Holiday Hurling Season. (Overheard at Portland Saturday Market.) I love this time of year. That’s right, as corny as it sounds, I love it. Family and friends and toasts and food. What’s not to love. Even the one time I took an early out on an evening’s […]

Singing Through The Christmas Noise

Once the commercial side dies down, you still have to get home. Did you have a party? We organized singing. It lasted one Christmas carol. Someone misunderstood the rules of Karaoke. You need music with scrolling words, not scrolling words with guitar chords and no guitar. I don’t remember the song, but one Christmas spirited young […]

LIFE LONG LEARNING STARTS EARLY

Baby Boomers do life long learning out of habit. What’s your excuse? Yes, I’m certified for leadership. At least that’s what the Fort Ord Leadership Academy says. What does a 21 Hour Leader Preparation Program do? In the wrong hands it turns a decent person into a tyrant. In the right hands it makes for […]

WHY SMALL TOWN PEOPLE MATTER

Lost in the hyper speed of modern life on a 1.4 terabit internet connection is the human pace of life. Call it small town life for small town people, but remember we’re all small town people once you peel off the layers of sophistication.   Jet setters once clamored for seats on the […]

Portland Hearts Beat On Broadway, The Rest Of The City Keeps Time

Portland hearts come in all shapes and sizes, all conditions and configurations. Like Portland, one size doesn’t fit all. Some arrive overwhelmed by the bigness of the big city. Buildings so tall and shiny dwarf pedestrians used to their own town. Try explaining Portland size in relation to the big big cities. Drop it […]
