ARMY ENLISTMENT? HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Me: Today is my Army enlistment anniversary. Did you remember.
Wife: It’s also the day my Mom died.
Me: It is? I mean, yes, it is, and also my anniversary.
Wife: I’m glad you remember it.
Me: And there’s another thing to celebrate on the same date.
Wife: What?

BOOMER BLOGGERS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. TOO CLOSE?

As a cohort of boomer bloggers, I read all about them.
From posts and opinions, to ABOUT pages, we’re all about challenges and adventures, the places we’ve been, places we’re going.
Take this picture for example. It’s from the Portland Art Museum page.
Does that big golden ring look like an adventure, some kind of portal? Yes?
What do you do when you see a portal? Jump in.

WANTED MAN vs NEEDED. THERE’S A DIFFERENCE?

If you’re waiting for a wanted man to make life better, you’ll be waiting a minute.
This man was a one-float parade around Silverton during my last visit.
You could hear him from blocks away with his booming sound system blasting AC/DC.
When I left, he followed my car out of town, then turned back at the city limits.
He was either a one float parade or a motor escort service.
Either way, I asked myself: Are there town characters everywhere?

ONE PORTLAND JOURNEY: MINE

I got off the bus at the end of my Portland journey, only to begin the real deal.
This is where I lived after breaking up.
My usual move after a break up was moving to bigger and better.
For instance, I broke up in Delaware and moved to Brooklyn, NY.
Here, I broke up in far SE and moved downtown Portland.
This building had a lot of break up apartments, so I was in good company.

CLASSIC PORTLAND RIVALRY

Social media Portland isn’t for the weak of heart.
It’s either heaven on earth, or a hell hole from the underworld sticky goo.
If you showed up recently, things are looking better; if you’ve been here a minute you’ve seen the ups and downs.
Lastly, if you’ve lived here your whole life? Uh oh.

Caregiving For The Baby Boomer Spouse

3 Ways To Lead, Follow, Or Get Out Of The Way. Who can name the ‘Do Your Own Thing’ generation? How about the ‘March To The Beat Of A Different Drummer’ generation? Or the ‘If You Love Something Set It Free’ generation? The ‘Me’ generation? The one with ‘Radicals And Freaks?’ On a blog called […]

MEDICAL MARIJUANA FOR A DOSE OF CANCER

Medical marijuana? Isn’t that just an excuse to get loaded without consequences, like jail? That’s what Pat thinks. I caught a rather painful case of cancer and tried one oxy pill, and one nip of liquid oxy, which changed nothing.   Why would marijuana be different?   At a desperate moment I tried […]

BOOMERPDX TO STAR WARS: AWAKEN ME FORCEFULLY WHEN WE GET THERE

The most impressive thing about Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Fan loyalty. No one is giving away the twists and turns, no one wants to be a Star Wars spoiler. In shades of The Crying Game, all lips are sealed so far. After a few failed attempts, I finally saw this installment. Okay, one failed […]

GENTRIFY PORTLAND RENT

What else goes up with gentrify Portland rent? Your blood pressure. Once upon a time the chase for the lowest rent led to some pretty sketchy dwellings. It was a contest to find the worst place for the lowest rent. A young single man seeking low rent in college is one thing. A single man […]

IN PRAISE OF GOOD DRAINAGE FOR THE NEW YEAR

One of the highlights of Army basic training is a week long camp out. Everyone needs to enjoy the outdoors this way. You learn new skills and meet new friends. New friends come with the other half of the tent you’ll spend the week in…together. It’s called a shelter half. If you can’t get along […]

Nature Inspires Art, Yellowstone Inspires Nature

Driving Yellowstone is a trip back in time, and more than pre-historic time even though a dinosaur walking across the landscape wouldn’t be much of a surprise.   In this real life vision of Jurassic Park buffalo work just fine.   By back in time I mean a 45 mph speed limit and […]

BROADWAY ROSE MAMMA MIA: I WENT AGAIN AND LIKED IT MORE IF THAT’S POSSIBLE

The first time I saw Mamma Mia: The Play, Kevin Pritchard still worked for the Portland Trail Blazer. It was about six years back when Portland had a guy who built the Blazers by ‘Pritch Slapping’ the NBA before he got fired for too much ‘Pritch Slapping.’   Mamma Mia: Touring Broadway Show […]

NEW IMPORT FOR OREGON BEER FANS

Wicked Weed, Asheville, NC, for Oregon beer fans. Name a better brand for Oregon beer fans than Wicked Weed. All things considered, it’s perfect. To make it even better, Wicked Weed Brewing makes great beer, one in particular. You won’t turn into one, but Freak of Nature rises to the top of my road beer […]
