ARMY ENLISTMENT? HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Me: Today is my Army enlistment anniversary. Did you remember.
Wife: It’s also the day my Mom died.
Me: It is? I mean, yes, it is, and also my anniversary.
Wife: I’m glad you remember it.
Me: And there’s another thing to celebrate on the same date.
Wife: What?

BOOMER BLOGGERS UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL. TOO CLOSE?

As a cohort of boomer bloggers, I read all about them.
From posts and opinions, to ABOUT pages, we’re all about challenges and adventures, the places we’ve been, places we’re going.
Take this picture for example. It’s from the Portland Art Museum page.
Does that big golden ring look like an adventure, some kind of portal? Yes?
What do you do when you see a portal? Jump in.

WANTED MAN vs NEEDED. THERE’S A DIFFERENCE?

If you’re waiting for a wanted man to make life better, you’ll be waiting a minute.
This man was a one-float parade around Silverton during my last visit.
You could hear him from blocks away with his booming sound system blasting AC/DC.
When I left, he followed my car out of town, then turned back at the city limits.
He was either a one float parade or a motor escort service.
Either way, I asked myself: Are there town characters everywhere?

ONE PORTLAND JOURNEY: MINE

I got off the bus at the end of my Portland journey, only to begin the real deal.
This is where I lived after breaking up.
My usual move after a break up was moving to bigger and better.
For instance, I broke up in Delaware and moved to Brooklyn, NY.
Here, I broke up in far SE and moved downtown Portland.
This building had a lot of break up apartments, so I was in good company.

CLASSIC PORTLAND RIVALRY

Social media Portland isn’t for the weak of heart.
It’s either heaven on earth, or a hell hole from the underworld sticky goo.
If you showed up recently, things are looking better; if you’ve been here a minute you’ve seen the ups and downs.
Lastly, if you’ve lived here your whole life? Uh oh.

EXPERIENCE: HOW TO TELL ONE THING FROM ANOTHER

      1. Visual: one is different than the rest.   2. Material: one is man made.   3. Use: one is decorative.   4. Location: chickens are world wide.

COPING WITH CANCER: EVERYDAY, OR JUST WHEN IT COMES UP

The first thing I read in a cancer waiting room was Coping With Cancer magazine. Articles and essays defined cancer, breaking down a most unimaginable deal to human understanding. The snippet for Coping on google says, “Coping with Cancer. A wide variety of professionals share their knowledge and experience in easy-to-read, relevant articles, and patients, […]

FITNESS COACH FOR BABY BOOMERS

Decide how fit you want to be before hiring a fitness coach. Any talk about fitness raises all the same negatives. Eat less, exercise more, be mobile, move around. And my favorite, Get Up. Many buttons on boomerpdx include the word UP as a reminder. Up is the key motivator. Up your interest in fitness. […]

INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN BOOMER

I hear you asking, “What’s a ‘proven’ boomer?” You know what a ‘made man’ is in the Mafia? They’ve taken an assignment from the boss and done good with it. Usually the assignment that makes you a Made Man also makes you a Button Man. You push the button, pull the trigger, you’re a made […]

HOW BROKEN HEARTS STAND

Future Nobel Prize winner Bruuuuce nails broken hearts. Badlands, you gotta live it every day Let the broken hearts stand As the price you’ve gotta pay Broken hearts happen all the time. Hearts break next to you and you don’t hear a thing. Bruce Springsteen sang about broken hearts in Badlands. It fit the song, […]

SHOOTING GUNS IN THE BOOMER ARMY OF 1974

The all volunteer Army was still new in the mid-70’s. No one opened a draft notice anymore, no life changing letters came in the mail. At least not that letter. In those days the Army was run by baby boomers straight out of Vietnam. Every Drill Sergeant had a story to make your toes curl and […]

SUPERIOR ARIZONA AFTER APACHE TEARS SEARCH

One of the most impressive rocks I’ve knocked out of a rock wall? Apache tears.   Just another rock until I held it up to the sun for my own solar eclipse.   What’s going on in there? See through rocks in Superior Arizona.

EXTRA ROOM AIRPLANE SEATS? FOR WHO?

From the crowds I’ve seen at airports, people have learned to negotiate the hurdles. With the hope of not being the only old and confused passenger, OCP, I pay attention.   Walk up to a screen near the airline you’re flying and key in the info you copied at home from a confirmation email […]

APACHE TEARS HAPPY ENDING

“Let’s meet one of my facebook friends,” I said one day during a Mesa Arizona visit.   “You met someone on facebook and you want to meet them?” she asked. “You never want to meet anyone.”   “Yes, I do. We’ll go prospecting. He knows where to find Apache tears,” I said.   […]
