BEING USEFUL LIKE ROBERT FULGHUM

This isn’t Robert Fulghum, it’s me being useful in my Robert Fulghum beard which has gone the way of every beard that dared show itself on my face.
He is probably a better beard steward than me. My enthusiasm for grooming an extra pet in the house lasts about six months.
The last dog lived sixteen years; the current dog is going on five.
Am I being useful for them? More than I am to a beard.

A SECOND LOOK AT “THAT AIN’T RIGHT”

What’s a second look at this garage arrangement tell you?
What’s missing: a fitness area with a treadmill, squat rack, work bench, maybe a couple of cars stacked on a lift, and a designated music area with guitars, drums, and amps all ready to go.
Not to say this garage is lacking anything, but it looks more like a storage unit than a daily use area to build on, play in, and break a sweat.
This is a great set-up for people ready to move. Loading time in three, two, one . . .

HISTORICAL FATHER’S DAYS 2026

Historical Father’s Days in the olde country where I watched my children roam like Vikings conquering a new land.
Corfe Castle fell to my marauders.
The locals didn’t like our style of exploration.
The walkway through the ruins led to more investigation off the path.
“How would you like it if we went to your country and climbed on the Jefferson monument?”
“If it was in ruins like this it sounds fun.”

FARMING DISASTER DONE ON PURPOSE

So much of the awful results of the farming disaster in the old Soviet Union came from bad policy decisions.
In the early 1930’s their main guy Stalin decided he knew more about science and farming than anyone.
He also had advisers explaining it to him in a way he agreed with.
Who doesn’t love the unconditional, “You are right, comrade.”
There was no room for disagreement.

FOLLOW THE LEADER? NOT SO FAST

‘Follow the leader,’ they say.
‘It’ll be a fun learning experience.’
If that’s a green light for you, take another look.
Maybe ask a question like, ‘Where are we going?’

24HR FITNESS vs $20

BETTING AGAINST THE ARMY AT THE OSU WALL? 1. Why does Oregon State University have a Marine Corps obstacle course near Gill Coliseum? Because OSU serves the Army, Marine, Navy, and Air Force ROTC. 2. Why would one former wrestler with a bad wing bet another he couldn’t climb over the red wall with the big yellow […]

Caregiving For The Baby Boomer Spouse

3 Ways To Lead, Follow, Or Get Out Of The Way. Who can name the ‘Do Your Own Thing’ generation? How about the ‘March To The Beat Of A Different Drummer’ generation? Or the ‘If You Love Something Set It Free’ generation? The ‘Me’ generation? The one with ‘Radicals And Freaks?’ On a blog called […]

CIGARETTE SMOKE ‘EM IF YOU GOT ‘EM? DON’T DO IT

Tobacco and cigarette smoke, the stuff of dreams and nightmares.   The dream part comes first. Light a stick and enjoy. All you’ve got to do is breath in, breath out, and watch the cigarette smoke curl into shapes. Later comes the nightmare part, the regret, the tubes, the hospital smell, the faces […]

MOTHER’S DAY EVERY DAY FOR MOMMA’S BOYS

When we were kids we used to ask the same question on Mother’s Day. “When is Kid’s Day?” We’d get the same answer. “Every day is Kid’s Day. We can’t ask about Mother’s Day now that she’s gone, but we can take Kid’s Day and move on over to Momma.

ALL DOGS MATTER, NORTH BEND BULLDOGS MATTER MORE

Of all mascots, North Bend Bulldogs rise to the top.   You probably heard this before? “You may forget names and faces, but you’ll never forget how you felt being there.” North Bend is where the ‘there’ is. It started early. Those lucky enough to finish their primary and secondary education in one place […]

GILLASPIE LOVESEAT TO HONOR AMERICA. IT’S FRAGILE

Who hasn’t been accused of making last minute presents? My specialty is carving names in oak with a router.   It takes practice, at least more than a last minute panic to produce something meaningful on Christmas morning.   I’ve been the object of such accusations, and while correct, there is a bigger […]

YOSEMITE IN AUGUST

Is It Worth The Time And Money To See Yosemite In August? The short answer is yes, but don’t pack your bag just yet. It’s a long drive from Portland to Yosemite, so careful plans are in order. You’ve planned a trip before? Sure you have. At least you’ve been on planned trips, so you’ve […]

VIDANTA EARLY BIRD MEETS THE MIRACLE CREW AT BURGER CUSTOM MADE

Every Five Diamond resort has a miracle crew, the people who make it all happen day after day, and make it look so easy. You have to look hard to find them, or be a Vidanta early bird.   This crew was busy setting up, busy like a NASCAR pit crew. Professionals one […]

PORTLAND FEVER CHILL TONIC

What Would Tom McCall do about Portland Fever? Portland, Oregon, more than a map point, destination, or cultural reference, is an infection. And it’s spreading. Once you catch Portland Fever, you see Portland everywhere. Pop a craft beer in the middle of no where and it’s The Portland of No Where. People who’ve never been […]
