CONFLICT WRITING: WHEN DOES IT HIT HOME

Conflict writing happens in every story, every movie, every book. Without conflict, there is no tension, and no reason to turn the page. Weak writing is a list, an inventory of boxes to check, instead of personal involvement. What’s the difference?

WRITERS WORK TO EXPLAIN WITHOUT BEING A JERK

Writers work, readers read, and somewhere between the two an agreement happens. Sometimes the agreement includes a reader who stops reading while the writer keeps writing. That’s what writers do. Readers look for the next story, something more worthy of their time. Then this happened:

WORK HARD, HELP OTHERS, SHOW HOW

The idea of ‘work hard’ sounds like a Pep Talk. “First we work, then we work harder, and if the job’s not done, we come back and do it again until it’s finished.” It works in a sports environment better than an office meeting. Why is that?

LEADERSHIP TOOLS OF THE TRADE, 2020

The leadership tools of the past have changed from being authentic. Authenticity has taken a back seat, but who’s driving the leadership car? The driver is decided by polls, likes, and shares. It’s all good until the big guy steps outside the lines.

APOLOGIZE NOW THAT YOU’VE HAD TIME TO THINK

HANDLING CORONAVIRUS vs HANDLING RAW CHICKEN

Handling coronavirus is different than getting a handle on other diseases, like cancer. Both are silent killers, but one is more contagious, though cancer is also contagious in at least one form. One is different than the other, but how different?

Most important, what is the question that needs an answer today, right now? I’ll go first, since I’m the blogger authority here, and start with wrong questions.

MASKED MEN AND WOMEN: WHO WORE IT BEST

Masked men and women send a message to all who see them: “I don’t plan on killing you,” is the message. “Don’t blame me if you get coronavirus,” is the mask subtext. What they aren’t saying:

MASCULINITY DISPLAYED: WHO IS OLD ENOUGH FOR OLD SCHOOL SPORTS

I heard masculinity displayed on sports talk radio. It wasn’t the same version shared by Kareem and Coach Wooden. (Do you know their story?) Jason Whitlock recently explained how the Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance appealed to him: Jordan was just an old school, manly, sort of guy doing old school and manly things. […]

WEAR MASKS? WHY WEAR A MASK?

Wear masks for safety in a grocery store. Why? So the old man hacking and snorting behind you without a mask doesn’t have to live the rest of his life as a super-spreader? Wear masks so you don’t have to get into your homestretch kick running away from coughs and sniffles? Or to show you’re […]
