WATERFRONT BLUES FESTIVAL OR BOOT CAMP

Five days of blues is a commitment. I signed to defend the blues by water. The Waterfront Blues Festival has nice river seating. For boats. The rest of us land locked fans see the blues flotilla as background, a tangled background combined with the Tillicum, Marquam, and Ross Island Bridges crossing their lines. When the […]

HOW TO BLUES FEST ON JULY 4TH

The Blues Fest, or Waterfront Blues Festival, can be tricky. From once showing up with two cans of food for admission to now, it’s been a long strange trip. Back then you’d go in, drink beer, walk around, get something to eat, drink beer, and leave. Today it’s reservations and lobster rolls before going in. […]

OREGON BLUES ON A FATHER / SON DAY

Oregon blues are a different blues. I blame the clouds. But no clouds on Waterfront Blues Festival Saturday, which is why I wore a rash-guard hoodie instead of layers of sunscreen. It was a no cloud Saturday awash in family time:

PORTLAND BLUES SATURDAY

Portland blues come in more shades than one. Dark blue for the homeless. Darker blue for the park bench addicts. Blue green for the tax paying homeowners just living their lives and doing the best they can. But what about the rest of us?

Boomer Blues Backlash

Robert Plant Headlines Waterfront Blues Fest What’s the greatest fear of going to a Classic Rock concert? Baby boomers face this one all the time. Is it watching a dream weaver come undone in front of your eyes? That the singer shows up so out of shape they huff and puff through their set? That their […]

MAKING TIME TO SHARE TIME

Making time for this, for that, but we still run out of time. On the run? From a Beaverton Farmers Market morning to a Waterfront Blues Festival evening, all the different faces turned into a blur. Some faces, not all.

Baby Boomer Music Died In 1973?

Did it die of natural causes? A new book explains how it happened. It wasn’t the plane crash with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper in Iowa. Lynyrd Skynyrd members also crashed without killing music. It wasn’t Bob Dylan plugging a Fender Strat in at the Newport Jazz Festival. Bruce Springsteen didn’t kill anything when […]

LONG RELATIONSHIPS? I’M A FAN

Long relationships that have stood the test of time amaze me. Call me befuddled, bemused, bewildered. How can anyone do it, let alone me? The first thing is finding anyone able to put up with your crap. It’s works even better when they don’t consider your crap to be crap. Take my wife, please.

HOW TO QUIT CARING AND MOVE ON

If you quit caring about someone or something, how do you explain it to yourself, let alone anyone else? You can’t just quit and leave it at that. You need to explain it all in painful detail. Or maybe that’s just me.
