BETTER LIVING STARTED YESTERDAY

Better living begins the day you say it begins. It goes like this: “I will do things that I know will make a better life.” Boomers don’t ask what ‘better’ means. We know. This is for the younger people who still think they’re better.

WORKING HARD IS HARD WORK. WHO KNEW?

Working hard used to be a rite of passage. “Start sooner than later and enjoy the rewards longer,” was the message. So hit the grind and go until there’s nothing left to grind, like this cartoon from the New Yorker? Then what?

PORTLAND ROAD TO TIGARD

The Portland road out of town comes in four iterations: Highway 30 to Scappoose, I-84 to Gresham, Highway 26 to Beaverton, and I-5 to Tigard. Of course the roads extend further, but not today. If you’re leaving Portland for the suburbs, those are the choices. I know you’re asking, “Why would anyone leave the beautiful […]

UNGROUNDED LIFE IN TIGARD

An ungrounded life is for people who wish they were somewhere besides where they are, where they live, where they spend their time. I met one of them in the local Walgreens. I could tell he was ungrounded by how he looked. He was wearing a suit, which from my experience, was his work clothes.

PORTLAND HATERS EXPLAIN THEMSELVES

Portland haters on twitter get to the point in roundabout ways: Real time, not the other time? That’s not a good start.

PORTLAND HOBBY FOR CITY SLICKERS

A Portland hobby is what suburban living turns into. “Let’s go downtown and take a spin around the river,” means one thing: Park in the garage near the Hawthorne Bridge, walk over to the Eastside promenade / Eastbank Esplanade, cross the Steel Bridge, and walk up Waterfront Park. The eastside walk puts a good light on […]

HOBBY BLOGGER EXPLAINS: WHY BOTHER WRITING?

Hobby blogger here, busy counting vanity metrics. Google analytics reports traffic from Seattle, not so much from Portland. West Coast readers show up more than any other region in the country. Call me a West Coast hobby blogger? I’ll take it, but . . .
