PAIN WRITERS: GUIDELINES FOR A PAINFUL STORY

Pain writers draw inspiration from two sources: Their own pain. Someone else’s pain. The source of pain is a standard feature. Pain writers want you to feel it. For example:

WHAT HURTS? HEMINGWAY SAID WRITE ABOUT IT

What hurts? Go ahead and tell me. This is a safe place. It doesn’t have to be a big hurt to matter. All the hurts add up, after all, then what do you get? What happens? I think you know what happens. I’ll go first on what hurts to pave the way.

MEDICAL ADVICE TO IGNORE IN AN EMERGENCY

Medical advice is wasted on hypochondriacs. The problems they bring to an appointment change by the end. “It hurts when I do this,” turns into, “It hurts when I don’t do that. But now it’s something else.” Sound stressful? It is. It’s always something else. How do I know? Please continue.

Better yet, make sure you understand before seeking a remedy.   A back ache is different than a […]

OPIOID SOUNDS TOO PRETTY, CALL IT WHAT IT IS

Imagine it on BBC: “Oh, Countess, could you please have your man-servant retrieve the opioid?” You’ve heard it before: Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. Painkillers fall into that category. After they kill pain, they choke out the person you used to be. If you don’t stop the opioid, […]

INFLAMMATION, CHRONIC PAIN, ADDICTION

We all have a horse in the chronic pain race. The best advice after surgery is taking pain pills on a schedule. If you let the pain get ahead of the pain killer, it’s hard to back down. Skip a pill and you might take an extra dose, then double up in half the scheduled […]
