QUITTING LOSERS FOR BAD PLAYOFF MOOD

Quitting Losers is the worst show on television. Last night’s episode was the Phoenix Suns quitting on the Denver Nuggets. I’m not a fan of either team, but I am an NBA fan. Why is it especially hurtful to watch professional players quit on a game?

PLAYOFF MODE LIFESTYLE? MANAGE YOUR LOAD

What is playoff mode and why haven’t I heard it before this year’s NBA Playoffs? Is it a mindset, a reminder for professional athletes to make a better effort? Or, is it a marketing scheme by the league and networks to bring back viewers disappointed with ‘load management’ during the regular season? The real question […]

BLAZER SEASON WRAP FOR DAME TIME

Another Blazer season, another year, and another view of Damian Lillard. The best teammate award and a first round exit. Who doesn’t get caught up in the whirlwind of the NBA Playoffs without noticing Lillard? I’m not asking who thinks they know what he should do next. It’s been another year, a primetime season, but […]

MASCULINITY DISPLAYED: WHO IS OLD ENOUGH FOR OLD SCHOOL SPORTS

I heard masculinity displayed on sports talk radio. It wasn’t the same version shared by Kareem and Coach Wooden. (Do you know their story?) Jason Whitlock recently explained how the Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance appealed to him: Jordan was just an old school, manly, sort of guy doing old school and manly things. […]

BLAZER VICTORY TAKES WINNING YARD EFFORT

You’ve heard this, or variations of it: A winning season begins after the last game of the year before. The Blazer victory over a hangover from last season’s first round loss to New Orleans was the first step. Humbling for a team to get spanked by an organization that finished this season a wreck driven by […]

BLAZER LILLARD ERASES BAD PORTLAND MEMORIES

Ask any sports fan and they’ll tell you: are the most lasting memories of your team the wins or the losses? Because once the fan base gets used to winning, the losing always shocks. Every Cowboy fan knows this. The same with Oregon Duck football fans from 2010’s Auburn cheat game win. That was a […]

PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS IMPROVE MEMORY

Memory problems? Let the Portland Trail Blazers help. This Easter a sign kept popping up: “At my age I can hide my own eggs and half an hour later won’t know where they are.” Ha. Ha. Ha? What’s so funny? I forget. Except memory loss is no laughing matter. You want to remember important things, […]

WILWRITE 1, TRAIL BLAZERS 0

Picking two winners on the same night? Good luck with that. Tuesday night was Willamette Writer, WilWrite Night, for WordPress at Portland’s Old Church, and Game 2 in the NBA playoffs in California. Which one to focus on? With time for one or the other, which one to choose: a power point presentation on WordPress, […]

DAMIAN LILLARD GETS FIRED UP

Rajon Rondo A Better Blazer Than Damian Lillard? The last playoff game in Memphis didn’t go well. Neither did the first. That’s the NBA. Teams click, then they don’t, and everyone finds a player to blame. In Portland that player is Damian Lillard. The poor guy becomes a household name, gets a ton of press, […]

SPORTS TALK RADIO IN PORTLAND

The rise of sports talk radio, the sort found on the  Portland AM dial at 620, 750, and 1080, gives a green light to fans who ought to have a yellow or red light. In a ploy to reach across gender lines, radio stations employ high-talking hosts who could be male or female on any […]
