AMERICAN PRACTICE: VOTE LIKE IT MATTERS

An American practice is like a medical practice: sometimes we get it wrong. Sometimes we get it right and it’s still wrong. If you’re old enough to vote, do it. Vote like it matters and encourage others to do the same. Voting is part of an American practice, like minding our own business and staying […]

VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER MAKES AN OFFER TO REFUSE

What is a virtual volunteer? My wife and I were making quiche together. She seemed a little down. Earlier she’d asked me to bring the Halloween decorations tote downstairs. It struck me as an irony to decorate for a hands on holiday in the coronavirus era. I shared the feeling. No wonder she seemed a […]

MIKE ROWE WORKS MILLENNIALS

Mike Rowe gets down to business on Millennials. And Boomers. Dear Mike, I’ve seen your television work. It looks hard. Sometimes it looks dirty and dangerous, hence the title, “Dirty Jobs,” and “Mike Rowe Works.” The work you do on television feels very real, and needed. However, your opinion on a ‘generation,’ and we […]

GROWING OLDER LIKE CHEESE, WINE, AND MILLENNIALS

Growing older is a common lament for all generations. The silliest complaints come from the youths. Who are these youths? Anyone younger than the one complaining about growing older. Since I’m sixty-five and don’t complain, let’s look at those who do. Ready?

HIDDEN BOOMER WHEN YOU SCRATCH THE SURFACE

Hidden boomer is like fine silver; more tarnish means better silver. Take that nasty looking spoon through a cycle of good polish and what happens? It turns into the star of the silverware drawer, a favorite for dipping and stirring. What happens when a nasty looking boomer gets cleaned up? Adjust expectations accordingly.

BETTER PERSON? BETTER THAN WHAT?

Does a better person replace a good one? Or is ‘better’ the enemy of ‘good?’ Like most things, it depends on who you ask. You get an answer either way, asking or not.

LEGACY BOOMERS LEARN TO TELL TIME AND TURN BACK CLOCK

Legacy boomers showed up early. They were the first wave of kids when Johnny marched home after WWII. Families started between 1946-1952 produced future hippies and draft dodgers and leaders. Those are the people referred to when millennials drag baby boomers with “Ok Boomer.” So the rest of us get a pass? Uh, no. And […]

HOPEFUL PEOPLE ARE HELPFUL PEOPLE

I can’t agree with the conflict between millennials and baby boomers. That’s not what hopeful people do. You won’t agree either by the end of this post. I’ll start at the boomer beginning and go forward from there. You’re going to read some uncomfortable truths, but they’ll make sense and smooth out by the end.

SPEAKERS CORNER SPEECH TO THE MASSES

My Speakers Corner speech to the masses didn’t go quite according to plan, which is always part of my plan. Actually, I was prompted to take to the ladder. One prompt and I had my speech ready. But Hyde Park is a long haul from one end to the other. How long? Longer than I […]

MOST FEARFUL GENERATION TODAY: INTERVIEW

And it’s not the big ones The beauty of writing a blog is the feedback from unexpected sources. Most of the reading audience for BoomerPdx is afflicted by the internet ghosts of privacy protection, bashfulness, or worst of all, they’ve forgotten how to work a keyboard, so the feedback I hear is in person, which […]
