READING OUT 2022: TOP POSTS ON BOOMERPDX

Reading out 82nd Ave in Portland Oregon leads the list. Instead of looking like a tired stretch of New Jersey road with Bruce Springsteen sitting on his daddy’s lap as he steered through town, 82nd was a magical fairly tale in 2022. Did I mention magical? I called it Dream Street. That’s what it was […]

GUEST BLOGGER RANDALL CUTHBERT

A guest blogger is one who finds their way onto a blog one way or another. My guest blogger career to boost boomerpdx showed me what it takes. Did I know Dr. Cuthbert would have what it takes? I had my suspicions.

ALONE AGAIN, NATURALLY OR UNNATURALLY

If you find yourself alone again, don’t despair. The young people will find others and wistfully remember their alone days. The elderly treasure their memories of an active, busy, life. At least that’s how it’s supposed to work. What gets in the way? Social media?

HOBBY CHILDREN LEARN TO VOTE

Hobby children come from any family of four or less. If there weren’t a hobby it would be a family of eight or ten. But some parents can’t face the challenge. Like me, but I’m a hobby guy anyway, so the tag fits.

HOPE HEALS? OR JUST WOO WOO

Hope heals the hopeless. I’m glad if it’s true. (pssst, it’s true.) But who are these hopeless people? Do you know one?

RUGGED INDIVIDUALISM vs COMPLIANCE AND LIFE FORCE

Rugged individualism: the life force that separates quitters from finishers. Ask one of them why they do hard things and expect a question in return: “Why not?” It’s a confidence builder, and role to model. Then there’s personal compliance, which shouldn’t be a problem, but . . .

AGING PARENTS FROM BOTH SIDES NOW

Aging parents get old fast. One day they’re skiing black diamonds on Mt. Hood, wind surfing the Columbia River, or hang gliding off sand dunes in Pacific City. The next day you’re blending up a hamburger because they can’t eat solid food. Is that how it works? Not for everyone.

‘BE PRESENT,’ SAYS YOUNG BOOMER HIPPIE

“Be present, be in the moment.” What’s that supposed to mean? You’re here, I’m here. That’s not enough? Do you remember the first time you heard it, a reminder, an order, to ‘be present?’

PORTLAND DIRT IS JUST LIKE YOUR DIRTY TOWN

To know Portland Oregon you better like dirt. I’m not talking about pioneering farmers, either. It started with the first native canoe stopping on the Willamette. Paddling against the current takes as much energy now as it did then, so if you’re into historical reenactment you’d better be in shape.

PORTLAND WEED: A SHORT HISTORY

Portland weed once came out of Goose Hollow Inn men’s room. A dealer worked from a stall with a full waiting room outside, according to sources. Like all good history, BoomerPdx relies on primary sources and historical relevance to reflect past life. If that life takes a turn into hardcore drug addiction, it’s a life […]
