YOUR LAND, MY LAND, OUR LAND

Your land is more than the surface under your feet. Go ahead and put ‘No Trespassing’ signs everywhere on a plot of dirt, but it’s still not enough. Why? Because it’s not your land, or my land, but our land. Here’s how I figured it out:

OREGON BLUES ON A FATHER / SON DAY

Oregon blues are a different blues. I blame the clouds. But no clouds on Waterfront Blues Festival Saturday, which is why I wore a rash-guard hoodie instead of layers of sunscreen. It was a no cloud Saturday awash in family time:

PORTLAND SURVEY ASKS: SO WHAT?

This Portland survey asks one question: Who is moving to Portland? More important, who is staying? People have opinions, none very favorable. I’m here to work on it.

SEATTLE FREEZE WARMS TACOMA

The Seattle Freeze in February isn’t about the weather. It’s not about the weather in July or August, either. If it’s not freezing weather, then what is it? Attitude, a chilly attitude.

PORTLAND HOBBY FOR CITY SLICKERS

A Portland hobby is what suburban living turns into. “Let’s go downtown and take a spin around the river,” means one thing: Park in the garage near the Hawthorne Bridge, walk over to the Eastside promenade / Eastbank Esplanade, cross the Steel Bridge, and walk up Waterfront Park. HOT ENOUGH YET: A COOL REVIEW FOR RELIEF

Yes, it’s hot enough. It’s been too hot for a few days, so hot that people talk about moving to Arizona for a break. Snow Birds aren’t running from the cold in June, they’re running from the surprising heat cooking the Pacific Northwest. When a Heat Dome slams shut, the temps rise. Who’s ever heard […]

PORTLAND TREND OR OREGON’S FUTURE ON A NEW TRAIL

While I usually drag on about other things, I sense a Portland trend here: @Oregonian Portland’s police chief and mayor are set to announce Tuesday that city police will no longer stop motorists for low-level infractions, such as equipment failures or expired plates, to reduce disproportionate stops of people of color. Fewer tickets for minor […]

PORTLAND WAY ON A CLEAR SUNDAY: WHAT DID YOUR TOWN LOOK LIKE

The Portland way means something different to everyone who crosses the city line. But the Portland way is the same thing for everyone who lived here and left. People miss Portland more than they thought they would. Why is that? Please proceed.

TOM McCALL WATERFRONT PARK SUNDAY

We’ve heard the same thing all out lives: Get outside. More than once we’ve said it to others. How often do we tell ourselves to ‘get outside?’ That’s what I told myself Sunday and outside meant Waterfront Park in downtown Portland, Oregon. I knew my audience.
