OLD AGE AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

Old age is a place to avoid if you can help it.
It starts with the idea of, ‘I’m too old to do that,’ whatever ‘that’ is.
Too old to skydive the first time? Maybe.
Too old to bungee jump off a bridge? Probably.
If you get past seventy without skydiving and bungee jumping? Good job.
So what is there to do instead? Everything else.
But maybe you’ve got something to prove to yourself.
If you’ve always been weak, get stronger.
If you’re short on endurance, build it up.
You may not have reached the peak of the Olympic motto of Faster, Higher, Stronger, and collected a few gold medals, but it’s still an aspirational goal.
Never lifted a weight in your life? Then every lift is a personal record.
Never clocked a timed mile? Then the first time you do is a personal record.
Once you get on board with the idea that personal records are fun to set, and break, talk about it with your friends.
Do that and you join the team of new fitness talk. It’s different than old fitness talk.
Old fitness talk features a bunch of meatheads staring at themselves in a mirror while they do curls to create the always fashionable big bicep muscle with a little bicep muscle on top.
Old fitness includes doing everything possible to retain the image you had of yourself in younger years.
Take a pill, take a shot. Another pill, another shot? Why not.
Hope that the side effects of the pills and shots are not worse than the side effects of old age.

What Side Effects Come With Old Age

A head of gray hair is a signal: You’ve either got the wisdom of the ages, or you’ve slipped into nonsense and expect others to agree because you’re old.
If you’ve achieved the wisdom of the ages, you’ll want to share it.
Sharing means letting it out at the appropriate times.
But, if you slipped into the nonsense part you can’t keep it to yourself.
Why won’t more people agree with you?

You’ll find more people will agree if you’re chosen as a figurehead to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Get that job in your seventies and you’re free to spew all of the pent up stupidity you’ve collected over a misspent life.
This is equal to staring at your arms in a mirror as a health measure and exhibiting behavior unsuitable for public consumption.
When image is more important than accuracy, personal opinion more important than science, things take a turn for the worse.
Erode too much trust and faith based on solid evidence and people get lost.

My weight loss journey, my current weight loss journey, is full of hope.
I could lose weight with drugs like Ozempic. It’s a sure thing with a few minor side-effects.
Nausea and vomiting are common side effects, affecting around 1 in 10 users and often occur when doses are increased.
Vomiting more than three times a day or violent vomiting accompanied by additional symptoms like abdominal pain may indicate that Mounjaro or Wegovy aren’t suitable for you, so please monitor your symptoms.
Constipation is a very common side effect of Mounjaro and Wegovy, affecting more than 1 in 10 users.
Diarrhea is a very common side effect, affecting more than 1 in 10 users of Mounjaro or Wegovy especially when you first start the injections. Diarrhea tends to be mostly mild and resolves after a few injections.

Projectile vomiting? Explosive diarrhea?
While they may be a good excuse to call in sick to work, it’s got to be awful to live through, especially when you know it’s coming.

Old Age Advice Online

From usnews.com:
When deciding how to spend their days, American retirees choose to do the following:
  • Sleep
  • Watching TV
  • Household activities
  • Working
  • Meals
  • Shopping
  • Volunteering
  • Reading
  • Browsing online
  • Socializing
  • Relaxing
  • Exercising
I’m not surprised if this list is in order of interest with exercise at the very bottom.
I’ll break it down for you.
Sleep means laying down at night and closing your eyes and surrendering to your unconscious.
Don’t like the idea of surrender? Then you won’t sleep very well.
Watching TV is another way of surrendering your time. Then you fall asleep.
With enough sleep and TV you’ll do household activities in a stupor and won’t know it until someone comes in and notices everything in disarray.
A working retiree keeps up with doctor appointment, bills, and household activities. It’s enough to make you want a nap.
Meals are a time to watch TV in case you get behind on your shows.
Shopping is one reason to leave the house. You could shop for food products you see on commercials while watching TV.
Volunteering is something you do until you find yourself with a group with different goals and you say to yourself, ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’
Read to enter a story that hooks you so hard you make plans to read more, to get back to your book, and find out ‘what happened.’
Browsing online is not the same as reading. It’s scrolling, a whole different skill with no plot or characters. It’s fun until you find a darker side of what you thought was normal.
Socializing is dusting off your social skills, the ones you used to expose people to their own hypocrisy. Don’t do that. Just be friendly.
Relaxing brings us back around to sleeping and watching TV. Not relaxing enough?
And lastly, exercise.
If you mention exercise to someone and they say in response, “I’m not wasting my time primping and preening and aggrandizing my body.”
What’s the next thing you say? Good luck?

PS:

It’s harder to live the life you want suffering from avoidable pitfalls.
Swollen ankles, knee pain, and inflammation accompany obesity in many cases, and obesity is no one’s friend.
Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea, liver disease, some cancers, and stroke, are no one’s friend.

PSS:

If you’re looking for role models in health and wellness, the Department of Health and Human Services sounds like a viable starting point.
The National Institutes of Health, included in the Department of Health and Human Services, are also a good resource, but they are both failing to serve the public’s best interests due to kooky leadership spinning science to suit their boss.
Think about eating less with fewer snacks, cutting back on the booze, and learning how to use a kettlebell.
Make exercise a top priority in your day. Find half an hour and pack it with this punch:

Kettlebell workouts can:
  • Add variety to your strength training workouts
  • Challenge muscles that may not be targeted with traditional weights
  • Engage multiple joints and muscle groups at once
  • Help you build functional, full‑body strength
  • Improve your balance and overall movement control
You can do a kettlebell workout while watching TV, so that’s two birds with one bell.
It gives a reason to relax and feel the pump. Three birds.
And you’ll sleep better. Four birds.
Once you get it going you’ll want eat better. Five birds with one bell.
Are there more?
