THE NATIONAL ANTHEM FROM JIMMY TO MARVIN TO MADISON SHANLEY

Who would have guessed the National Anthem would be a hit at the Woodstock Arts and Music Festival in 1969? Was it an odd choice for guitar ace Jimmy Hendrix to play? Let’s ask the New Yorker magazine for an opinion:

MOUNT HOOD MORNING

BEST WISHES SENT ONE POST AT A TIME

Best wishes come when good things happen to others. That’s what we do, send best wishes and love. If we understand what happened and why, then what? Send best wishes and love. So I’m an expert on this? No, but I’m getting better at it. Now about you? Need some practice?

STAY CALM ENOUGH TO MAKE IT THROUGH HARD TIMES

Stay calm is different than being told, “CALM DOWN.” The first is what you tell yourself; the second is what you hear when it’s not working. What’s the big deal about staying calm? Is it really that important? Yes, and here’s why:

ANTICIPATION ANXIETY, OR “HOW BAD CAN THIS BE?”

New beginnings around here start with anticipation anxiety, sleepless nights, and carefully moving forward. Does that sound like your standard operating procedure, your SOP? MOVING ON WHEN YOU’RE THE LAST TO KNOW

Plans for moving on depend on timing: Don’t go too soon, or wait too long. If you’ve picked up and changed locations by yourself, you know the drill. Sometimes it works out better than expected. Then there’s this:

ACCEPTABLE LOSSES? WHO DECIDES FOR BOOMERS

Acceptable losses are like minor surgery. There’s no such things as minor surgery, just minor surgeons. Or, it’s minor surgery if it’s someone else going under the knife. Losses are the same. The closer you are, the less acceptable the loss.

TAKE MY WIFE, PLEASE. OR ELSE

When Henny Youngman said, “Take my wife. Please,” did he jump up and slap himself? Did his wife take a swing at him? When a joke goes bad, bad enough to get clocked, it’s hard for us to understand. Especially when the joker takes a smack from another funny guy who didn’t like the joke. […]
