SOCIAL MEDIA FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN

To use social media to any satisfaction you need to be strong, at least strong enough to carry your feelings.
One bucket for your feelings, another for social media.
Which one is heavier?
Which one ought to be heavier?

I’ve got a pal working on his podcast, the John Rossi Podcast.
He’a starting next week after much preparation.
Here it is:
Johnrossipodcast.com.
Bookmark it and come back often to see what’s going on.
Tell others to click the address. Let’s give a big opening to a new podcast.
One question arises when baby boomers introduce a new project: Aren’t you a little old for this sort of thing?
And it’s a fair question, the age question.

Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m sixty-four?
The bigger question?
Do you have the urge to contribute to social media, and if so, what will it be, how will it land, who will care enough to pay attention?
This baby boomer blogger, this boomerpdx page, always answer with a resounding “YES,” to the new kids on social media.
I say yes to the formats that show who’s doing what, and where it’s aimed.
I say yes to endless preparation, pre-launch jitters, coming across as more than you are, less than you are, and leaving reader and listeners in anticipation of the next episode.
Sounds pretty good, huh?

A Picture Worth A Thousand Clicks

‘Am I Next’ is a statement against gun violence, the senseless part of gun violence.
It asks the same question all entrepreneurs ask, all bloggers, all podcasters.
Am I next? Will they like what I’m doing, where I’m going?
The band that charts their first big hit in a long running career will sing that first song forever.
They’d better like it, better if they love it.
Does the content creator love their topic, love how they handle it, love the exploration?
The audience knows sooner than later, maybe sooner than the creator,
The important thing I recommend? Keep at it.
Things happen.

You post a viral episode, a viral blog piece, and the world is glowing.
You’re on top of the top, the leader of the pack.
Enjoy the moment because it is fleeting.

Make The Choice

Social media reveals character. Call it a look behind the curtain.
You do the work on your independent site while others scroll along like you’re all the same.
And they’re wrong.
You are wrong if you call them out. Don’t do that.
They scroll, you create content for scrollers.
For worthy content, people stop their scroll and read, listen, and send the link to your work to their friends and followers.
That’s them telling their people who they are through you,
Sounds complicated, but it’s not.
The complicated part is the original source getting all butt-hurt that their genius is under-appreciated.
Next comes the surprising reveal, the shit-talk, the put-downs, belittling, that’s been simmering below the surface.

PS:

Social media is so personal for asking people about the details of their lives, people so lonely they respond with everything because it’s better than the empty feeling of being abandoned by their dreams.

PSS:

Social media is so impersonal when you want something back.
“Oh, just like my ex, selfish and stingy and hiding behind a keyboard in a dark room.”
Are those qualities you’d normally find in a good relationship?
Nooooooooo, they are not.
The johnrossipodcast.com is coming to open the door and turn on the lights.
