RISK MANAGEMENT FOR MARRIAGE

RISK MANAGEMENT

Does risk management apply to marriage?

Only if you’re married.

Single people have other risks to mitigate.

So what are the risks for married people?

The biggest risk is in not apologizing often enough.

For example:

You and your partner enjoy an alcoholic drink on occasion.

They have a favorite and let everyone know all about it.

You enjoy the local varieties of beer, seltzer, wine, and liquor. (Local meaning what’s already in the house.)

To be sure of a steady supply they buy a gallon of booze to refill a smaller bottle.

Why? Because the big bottle is too heavy to lift? The small bottle doesn’t look so boozy? They like doing lab work with glass beakers and funnels?

All of the above?

When the big bottle gets toward the end they ask, or blame, who drank all their favorite booze?

Since there’s only the two of you as the likely suspects, and it wasn’t you?

Who could it be?

The answer, like the answer to all life’s major mysteries, can be found on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

You can find answers to pretty much everything if you watch long enough, except how so much booze disappeared.

Risk Management for Marriage literature says make a sincere apology whether it’s deserved or not, then keep an eye on liquid levels.

Risk Lessons To Manage Sooner Than Later

RISK MANAGEMENT

If your marriage partner decides you need to join a winery to enjoy time with friends and family, what to do?

Join the winery and invite friends and family.

Just remember, this is expensive wine. And membership includes four allocations per year.

What’s that mean?

Sixteen bottles of good wine from grapes grown just up the road. Per year.

Sound good to you? It’s great, but remember risk management.

This is wine for friends and family, not every day wine for you to chug down like grape Kool-Aid.

And you get a reminder whether you need it or not.

Maybe you do? Maybe you don’t? Who chugs wine, anyway.

Either way, make a sincere apology before opening a bottle of Hawks View ‘Jack’s Pinot Noir.’

Better Alcohol Risk Management

RISK MANAGEMENT

Say you’ve had a bottle of whiskey in your house for a year or more.

It’s about two thirds gone and you decide to make a whiskey and ginger.

You saw a bottle of Ginger Beer in the garage and thought of your mother in-law’s favorite drink.

So you bring in the mixer, set out the bottle of Pendleton, and load up a glass with ice.

No problem? It’s not gin, so the coast is clear in case that mystery pops up again.

But, without your knowing it, the peculiar ban on gin, that expanded to wine, now includes Pendleton Whiskey?

Think about the sincere apology you made for Hawks View Wine six months ago where you poured a glass on a Sunday before brushing out your dog in the garage.

Then make yourself a whiskey and ginger, take it out to the garage, put on the Cowboys vs Giants, and brush out your dog.

Extra points for veterans.

Tips to remember in the event of more static:

You’re drinking at home, not some $25 per drink cocktail lounge.

You’re not driving, or plan to drive.

It’s a Sunday afternoon drink, not a ‘hair of the dog’ Sunday morning drink to get right after binge-drinking Saturday night.

The BoomerPDX conclusion:

In the known world of medical science there is no evidence against having an icy-fresh whiskey and ginger drink at the right time and the right place.

I’m thinking of just such a place.

Medical Science Risk Management For Boozing Baby Boomers

WebMD:

If you do decide to drink, professionals recommend that people over 65 shouldn’t take more than one standard drink each day and no more than 7 each week.

Of course, this amount may vary depending on your own health and body type.

University of Rochester:

How much alcohol is safe for 70 year old man?

What’s a safe amount? The National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism advises that people older than age 65 who are healthy and who don’t take any medicines have no more than 7 drinks a week. And no more than 1 to 2 drinks on any 1 day.

Meanwhile in Australia:

How much alcohol is safe to drink daily?

If you’re a healthy adult: To reduce the risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury, healthy men and women should drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week and no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day.

We have been married 51 years and you got it right. Some times admit you’re wrong when your not and just move on.

    • We do the same, with an addition of ‘probation’ since we can’t put anyone ‘on report.’ Who would we report to anyway?

This marriage is going on thirty-eight years and moving right along.
