WRITING CONFERENCE UPDATE FROM CHUCK SAMBUCHINO

writing conference

How the writing conference update started:

Hi David,

Chuck Sambuchino here (formerly a long-time editor with Writer’s Digest and the GLA).

The GLA is the Guide To Literary Agents, a book I’ve bought. I follow Chuck on Twitter. He sent me a message, which is different than a notification.

This is Chuck Sambuchino:

Freelance Editor — Bestselling Humor Book Author — Authority On How To Get Published

I hope you’re safe in these strange times. I’m just touching base with all my Oregon-area tweeps real quick. I’m helping organize several *ONLINE* writing conferences from March 2021 through September 2021. Anyone can attend from anywhere. Find more info here: http://writingdayworkshops.com/event-locations–dates.html…

I am safe in these strange times. Aren’t I?

I’m feeling pretty safe, all things considered.

Remember the movie HER when the guy discovered his special had 8000 other specials? And she was in love with 600 of them the way they were in love together?

Hearing from Chuck on a first name basis on twitter was a little like that. But still, it’s a special thing. Since it’s about an online writing conference, it’s all good.

I’ve been to writing conferences and pitched and will attend more and pitch again.

My first pitch was for a screenplay:

Part Forest Gump and part Saving Private Ryan, Flying Home captures a side of WWIi in the Pacific never seen before. From the Battle of Britain to Pearl Harbor to the island hopping campaign to firebombing Japan, a blue blood from MIT, a grad school turned airplane mechanic, changes the outcome of the war.

The writers conference dates are April 9-10, May 14-15, June 12, July 10, August 7, and September 10-11. I wanted to help spread the word. Each event has classes and 30+ literary agents taking virtual pitches.

My next pitch is for a memoir:

Watch Your Mouth is the story of a man who taps into his past to help plow though neck cancer treatment for HPV virus cancer. Weaving a hilarious love life review between moments of chemo and radiation terror eases the doubts of healing and understanding. When the time came to bear the burden of treatment, or quit and die, this champion wrestler gave it his all-American best effort. Then his wife and kids intervened and saved the day.

Since the title is already taken, my memoir will need a new name. This is the blurb for the other Watch Your Mouth:

From bestselling author Dr. Tony Evans comes a compelling resource to help you learn to tame your tongue. With life-changing insights shared through engaging lessons and anecdotes, you’ll learn what the Bible teaches about talking.

Taming a wild tongue based on Bible teaching isn’t what my book is about. It’s more about consequences and acceptance; more about progress than perfection. My first title was regionally correct for Oregon with ‘Licking Cancer In The Beaver State.’

It raised a few eyebrows in the trial audience and set tongues a wagging. My book has been professionally edited by the Indigo Team. Three editing passes highlighted the right time to circle back and which scenes needed more unpacking to maintain story momentum.

More Writing Conference Updates From Chuck

Hope you can make an online event, or hope you can help spread the word to writer friends and writing groups anywhere.

Thank you, and again, please stay safe! I am happy to answer any questions.

Dear Writers In The Audience,

Do you belong to a writer’s group like Willamette Writers? If not, find one and join.

How about a critique group? Any writer friends?

You’ll find both after attending a writing conference. One of my writing friends is an airline pilot. We met at a conference, then a few years later at an airport. He was piloting my plane and invited me into the cockpit.

During the pre-flight talk he mentioned me by name: “And let’s welcome little Davy Gillaspie who is taking his first airplane ride.” I still laugh every time I think of it. Thanks Captain V.

Why I like Chuck Sambuchino and why you should too:

He’s a writer who knows the business end. Do you?

He plays guitar in a cover band. Everyone should have an instrument and a band. Or at least jam tracks or a loop machine.

The biggest of the big: He’s got a line of happy customers longer than a google search for writing advice. He’s helped people, and that’s nice, but the list of people praising his help are writers who have found agents.

They love Chuck. Have any of them done any promotion work for an online writing conference? And included a sneaker pitch in the post?

Anyone? Leave comments. Thanks, Chuck.
