‘THE PLOT’ THICKENS: A BOOK REVIEW

The Plot is the first book I’ve read that includes Facebook and twitter as important characters. No that’s not a spoiler. Neither is this: they’re cast in a dark light. Did I enjoy reading The Plot? A reviewer on Amazon said the first third drags along but that’s the part I most enjoyed.

BEACH MUSIC BY PAT CONROY, A REVIEW

Beach Music sat in my TBR pile for years while I passed by. At over 700 pages it intimidated me. I like novels around 200-250 pages. The Great Gatsby clocks in at 208 paged; Catcher In The Rye runs 234 pages, more or less. Beach Music at 800 pages? I got a Harry Potter vibe […]

VIETNAM VETERANS ON BOOMERPDX

My Vietnam Veterans show up on BoomerPdx not as veterans but as guys I’ve met along the way. Extraordinary guys I’ve been lucky to meet. What’s my plan to meet anyone? Get out of the house and walk around and you can’t go wrong.

INSIDE HISTORY? FIND AN INSIDER

How does anyone get the real story inside history? Read books, watch documentaries, tour museums? That’s a good start, and for many an end to the story. But what if you want more because you know there’s more out there?

UNDERDOG LIFER STARTS EARLY

An underdog lifer life needs to start early, otherwise it’s just following trends. But how early? Top underdogs are never the first born, the first to start new things, or the first in line. If they were first, they wouldn’t be underdogs. Start with where you were raised.

HOW TO BE A SELF-GATEKEEPER

A self-gatekeeper is the same as a regular gatekeeper. They restrict who can and who can’t pass through a gate. Except as your own gatekeeper, the gate is you. Who gets to experience the joy of you, and who doesn’t? Start with joy. Why joy? Even if you’re not a joy boy, or girl, figure […]

GUEST BLOGGER RANDALL CUTHBERT

A guest blogger is one who finds their way onto a blog one way or another. My guest blogger career to boost boomerpdx showed me what it takes. Did I know Dr. Cuthbert would have what it takes? I had my suspicions.

LIVING LIFE TO DIE? THANKS RILKE

This is the guy living life past my bathroom window in Cannon Beach, Oregon. A man playing slide guitar in a slick suit felt like a Coen brothers break from reality. Since I like listening to slide guitar, I also saw him as an omen for good things in the future. That’s how that works. […]

SELF ACCEPTANCE? HOLD MY BEER

If self acceptance sounds like another woo woo to you, take another look. You are who you are, now who you were, or who you want to be. It’s that simple, and that hard. If self acceptance is not for you, then you’ve got problems. What kind of problems, you ask?

GOOD TIMING FOR A BETTER LIFE FROM COMICS TO SPORTS AND BEYOND

Good timing is what you see in the rearview mirror. It’s history, memory, and and it’s a rush. We all have our own story, unaffected and pure at first. Then things start happening. These things, those things, and we learn our story. Most important, we learn how to tell our story with good timing.
