WORKING WITH ART WORKS TO HELP DAVID HOCKNEY WORK BETTER

‘Meet me at the art museum’ is a sure way to discover how art works, starting with the installation.
Don’t have time for a trip to downtown Portland?
Leave it to boomerpdx to fill in the frame.
Sometimes the art work delivers in mysterious ways.

LIFE CYCLE: TOMATO KING 2026

The life cycle of tomatoes starts with an idea:
‘Let’s do something with the space we’ve got.’
When the space includes a side yard with lots of sun?
Plant that tomato.

SOCCER, FOOTBALL, AMERICAN WORLD CUP, FINALLY

The American World Cup showed city after city jumping for their teams.
Not so much the American team in the finals and semi-finals, but the good teams.
Why not American soccer? What’s gone wrong to prevent the home team from becoming regulars in the Sweet Sixteen, the Elite Eight, and the Final Four?
Maybe it’s the branding since college basketball has taken all the cool names.
Maybe it’s that American football is more about passing and running than kicking?
I’ve figured out the problem, and solution.

THROWBACK BEACH RUN TO SEASIDE

Growing up in a coastal town took the drama out of any beach run.
North Bend was surrounded by Coos Bay with a high tide creeping on Virginia Avenue and sometimes giving 101 a good rinse.
With beaches to the north, south, and west, it was easy to find the right one.
Going to the beach wasn’t so much a plan as it was a possible destination a half hour away from town.
Then we grew up and things got more complicated.

THE ‘HISTORY ANGLE’ TO CONFUSE CITIZENS: IT DIDN’T HAPPEN

The ‘history angle’ is not so much a disguise as an omission, of leaving things out.
Traffic on boomerpdx started coming in large numbers from China and Hong Kong, so I thought of ways to include them.
Write historical posts about the events banned in their country and address historical omissions gaining ground in America?
That’s one idea.

GUN WORLD SURROUNDS YOU? What’s It Mean When You Don’t Notice

A gun world is all around us in America. Start a casual conversation and you might learn the mild mannered person you’re talking to owns thirty guns.   Since it’s so long ago, I like reflecting on my days as an Army medic. It comes in handy helping me pretend not be as grossed […]

RADIATION, HYDRATION, SATURATION, REPEAT

From cancercenter.com Because radiation is used on and in their bodies, some patients mistakenly worry that this automatically means their bodies become “radioactive” after they treatment. Most patients just want to finish radiation and don’t care about the baggage. That comes later. If they beat cancer, they accept the side effects. Once […]

CIGARETTE SMOKE ‘EM IF YOU GOT ‘EM? DON’T DO IT

Tobacco and cigarette smoke, the stuff of dreams and nightmares.   The dream part comes first. Light a stick and enjoy. All you’ve got to do is breath in, breath out, and watch the cigarette smoke curl into shapes. Later comes the nightmare part, the regret, the tubes, the hospital smell, the faces […]

RAISING KIDS THE BABY BOOMER WAY

An article posted by salon.com, an article from 2001 titled The Curse Of The Hippie Parents, reflects on a then thirty five year old woman’s memories from childhood. If she’s forty eight now, she’s almost in late boomer territory. Which means her parents were early boomers, the group who made it all possible by their […]

ADDICTED TO WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN

Some addictions have treatment. Not when you’re addicted to what could have been. The lady in the image is a poster child for living dreams and sharing them. From a country girl in south England to traveling the world, she collected the sort of memories usually seen on the big screen. She joined the armed […]

SHOOTING GUNS IN THE BOOMER ARMY OF 1974

The all volunteer Army was still new in the mid-70’s. No one opened a draft notice anymore, no life changing letters came in the mail. At least not that letter. In those days the Army was run by baby boomers straight out of Vietnam. Every Drill Sergeant had a story to make your toes curl and […]

PORTLAND MOVE REVIEW: WHERE TO LOOK

Things look different before a Portland move. The Portland move is actually a move to Portland, not the Portland of California, the Portland of the midwest, or the Portland of the South. Call it the Portland of Portland. But where do you start with someone else in the car planning a Portland move?

PORTLAND’S FARM TRIP

How Far Away Is Portland’s Farm, Portland’s Midwest? Not Far At All. Do you ever imagine golden waves of grain while sweating it out in your hotbox apartment? You wait for a breeze to blow through the crops in your mind while heat mirages rise off the asphalt beach parking lot. Or you’re standing in […]

Nature Inspires Art, Yellowstone Inspires Nature

Driving Yellowstone is a trip back in time, and more than pre-historic time even though a dinosaur walking across the landscape wouldn’t be much of a surprise.   In this real life vision of Jurassic Park buffalo work just fine.   By back in time I mean a 45 mph speed limit and […]
