OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER, BUT . . .

Age is determined by one moment.
It’s when you hear this: You’re old enough to know better.
You hear it the first time when you’re too young to remember your parents saying, “I thought they were out of that stage.”
But you weren’t.
From potty training to feeding yourself, riding a bike to writing your name, once you’ve accomplished those milestones you can’t go back.
Parents have seen this progression and hoped to speed it up.
Kids take their own time along the way.
Do this, do that, but the kids do what they want to do.
Was I a permissive parent? My wife and I did timeouts for our kids instead of beating them.
Is that permissive? If so, and it’s wrong, I’ll take that timeout.
Except it’s not wrong.
Everyone has their own way of doing things. Why not do better?

Volcano Food

This was on the menu one night out with friends. (Hey J-J)
Looks good, but it’s served in a super heated rock bowl that never cooled down and never stopped cooking.
It was so hot I wondered how anyone ate it. Was I supposed to put everything on a plate?
If that’s right, there was no plate so I picked around until things cooled off.
Which they didn’t.
I like to try new things, but this was a one and done, or one and not done.
It was still too hot when we left and I got the go-box.
Am I old enough to know better and not get this again?
I’ve never seen it again, but I’d probably give it another try.

Maybe Tonight?

When you’ve got self-discipline anything is possible.
Run a marathon, climb a mountain, ride a bike for a hundred miles.
Staying in shape is a life-long challenge some forget about.
We never thought to stay in shape as kids, why now?
Baby boomers have a thing called a ‘check engine light.’
Maybe you’ve seen the same thing in your car?
For us it’s high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Something changes in our metabolism and boom, you need to get on the ball.
If losing weight and getting fit is not on the schedule, meds are.
Besides, it’s easier to swallow a pill than avoid swallowing a gallon of beer, a tub of ice cream, and wondering, ‘why am I fat?’

Welcome To The Sauna

PS:

It’s hot in there, real hot. Set the clock, but tell yourself you can leave when you want.

PSS:

You’re not allowed to give yourself a timeout in the sauna with beer in the closest refrigerator.
Unless you’ve been bad. Have you been bad? How bad?
Leave a comment and I’ll prescribe the beer, starting with Pilsner Urquell.
I’ve been a fan of Beck’s.
I’ve been a fan of Stella.
The labels say one thing, the fine print another.
Both are from the Budweiser breweries, but claim authenticity based on using original recipes.
My push is for original recipes in the nation of origin, like Pilsner Urquell.
I explained my reasoning out loud and heard, “What’s the water like in the Czech Republic?”

Plzen’s contribution to beer history began in 1295, when the King of Bohemia, Wenceslas II, founded the town of New Plzen on the banks of the Radbuza River.
Old Plzen was located nearby, about 9 kilometers southeast in the Uslava Valley, in an area that was not easily accessible for trade.
King Wenceslas chose the new site carefully, placing New Plzen (now known simply as Plzen) near the confluence of four waterways, the Mze, Radbuza, Uhlava, and Uslava Rivers.
