LIVING ALONE WITHOUT THE LONELY PART

living alone

“Living alone is not normal,” I’ve heard.

“People need people.”

It’s a nice idea and probably true most of the time. Then you hear an old timer say, “I’ve been divorced longer than I was ever married,” like it’s some kind of conversation starter.

What was the final straw for him?

“Her voice. I couldn’t get that voice out of my head for five years after we got divorced.”

Who hasn’t heard a voice and thought, ‘Man, that would be hard to live with.’

I think of that when I see old people alone. Are they missing someone they once loved, or just happy not to hear from someone they used to love?

If they had a theme song for their walk-up music it would be Alone Again (Naturally).

Living alone is one thing, but what if they were married?
