HPV AWARENESS DAY STARTS MARCH 4, START WALKING

“Love is everywhere, unfortunately so is hpv.”

That’s the message on the first HPV Awareness Day, and from the looks of things, a message that is taking root.

It didn’t resonate with me in years past, not when I learned more about hpv and the numbering system, like hpv16. Not even last year when hpv16 tossed me on the cancer pile. HPV Awareness? I was plenty aware strapped to a radiation table, then hooked to the black bag of chemo.

How much more awareness does one writer need? Like discover, treatment, and recovery, I found out it’s not all about me. For the new kids in class, it’s not all about you either.

So what’s HPV Awareness all about? So glad you asked.

HPV and Me runs hard toward “BUILDING AWARENESS AND PROVIDING EDUCATION ABOUT HPV THROAT CANCER.” And Pamela Tom wrote about my experience.

Seventeen other HPV Awareness partners are on the North America list with HPV and Me.

Europe participation groups are a little thinner with eight countries joining with a few partners each. But don’t let the low numbers fool you. Their hpv is no different.

Call me short sighted, but France isn’t pulling it’s weight again. As a newly minted hpv throat cancer member I started wearing a beret and named the lump on my neck Pierre. It wasn’t too funny at first, then lost all humor. But not for long.

I’ve still got the beret, but not Pierre. So long, Frenchy.

Argentina is a big HPV Awareness partner in South America with eight members. Brazil has one, and Peru rounds out the rest of the continent out with one. Three nations and ten members? Come on South America, that’s a weak effort.

I would enjoy reporting that the two most populous nations on earth have a robust membership for HPV Awareness, but joy is not happening when India and China each have one.

Dear India and China,

Please get on board with hpv awareness. This isn’t fake news, or something that goes away one it’s own, at least not the cancery part of hpv in both men and women. It’s preventable, but once it settles in, there’s an awful reality.

It starts with explaining how you got it, where you got it, and who you need to tell. It’s even dicier with hpv16 neck cancer. Talk about a tough conversation with wife and kids and anyone who sees your weight loss if you’re fortunate enough to survive the treatment ordeal. Or even start the treatment ordeal.

Cultures of castes like India, one agency is enough for more than a billion people?

In an ancient culture of China, one agency is enough for more than a billion people?

Maybe things happen differently there, or maybe it’s something else. I’ll make the stigma call for both countries. Go ahead and hide behind your false pride while your people need awareness.

Africa throws shade on China and India with it’s three countries and seven agency participation. Maybe HVP Awareness is too much for a continent dealing with so much with so little in resources?

How much funding is needed to say, “Hpv16 neck cancer is preventable with good communication between partners?”

Critics might say it’s difficult to communicate in a culture that approves genital mutilation in young girls, but a word from a neck cancer veteran could help.

International Partners for HPV Awareness lists twenty two members. Some are repeats, but the message is worth repeating.

By now you’re probably asking ‘what message?’ I don’t blame you. Until you get closer to the topic, HPV Awareness is just another day. Save those sentiments for tomorrow.

Let’s finish up with the FAQ on givelovenothpv.org.

On an international scale it’s important to communicate in a way most understand, which means looking for a standard. Steven Tyler from Aerosmith is the standard with the opening to their classic song ‘Walk This Way.’

Backstroke lover always hidin’ ‘neath the cover
‘Till I talked to my daddy he say
He said, you ain’t seen noting
‘Till you’re down on a muffin
Then you’re sure to be a-changin’ your ways

Talk to each other about things before things take off on their own. Then talk some more. Finish up with more talk, talk, talk.

Clear things up instead of getting all cloudy, then you’ll walk this way, that way, your way. Walk away on HPV Awareness Day.

So I took a big chance at the high school dance
With a missy who was ready to play
Was it me she was foolin’?
‘Cause she knew what she was doin’
Taught me how to walk this way
She told me to

Walk this way, walk this way
Walk this way, walk this way
Walk this way, walk this way
Walk this way, walk this way
Ah, just give me a kiss
