HOW TO BE A FAMILY KING OF YOUR CASTLE

gym

The family king is who the light shines on.
That’s key to remember. Grab a flashlight.
The king doesn’t like bright lights, but it’s part of the job.
What’s it take to wear that crown?
A family creates an atmosphere of calm, a vibe for being together.
They have things in common with the king, who has things in common with everyone.
Sometimes the king needs to remind others what they all have in common.
It’s not taking a stand as mush as drawing a line.
The king helps draw the lines, and redraws as needed.
No head chopping, no erasing civilizations, just being a known factor while others figure things.
Is he a fair king?
Ask the queen. If you have a king, you need a queen.

About That Queen

Everyone knows this queen. It’s Portlandia, ruler of Portland, Oregon.
Even though she’s stashed out of the way on a bus line in the middle of town, she rules.
While the king can be slow and deliberate, queenie takes a sharper, but not cutting, angle.
She knows her faults and quirks, and has spent a lifetime studying them in others.
In her world she’s been very busy. It’s Portland, after all.
Even though she may snap confusing opinions and takes, then expects universal interpretation, no one tries harder to understand others than her.
The family king sees the work, appreciates the work, but is no interpreter, which leads to differences.

What’s It All Mean?

The family king comes in every age in every family.
Who wants to be king? Everyone.
Who wants to play king, pretend to be king, and get all butt-hurt when they learn what it really means?
Everyone.
We’re not living in an era of kings and respect.
It feels like the opposite, where people look for and accept some semblance of a shaggy king.
Will they find one? Yes.
Will you? Nooooo.
You’re a family king with a loyal following. Why look for another?

PS:

It’s important to model behavior that makes a good king. That’s the fun part, the secret.

PSS:

Tell your queen: Love is the space between us, however far or close.
That is your bond. Go ahead and give a try.
