GRASSROOTS WORK FOR THE NEAR FUTURE

grassroots work

Grassroots work for the future is making noise.

In our digital age ‘grassroots’ means something different than other times.

The Attention Economy asks but one question:

“Can you make me care about your cause?”

The Foundation for the Future is a case study for a good answer.

Fifty years ago the authors of The Limits to Growth addressed the issues of the growth of populations, industrial production, availability of arable land, natural resources, energy, waste, pollution of many varieties and the future of the human race as determined by health and longevity.

This book was a magnificent precursor to future efforts to predict the future of us humans on this planet, a precursor that was roundly criticized by both economic and scientific institutions because it suggested we need to constrain our growth in many human endeavors .

Foundation For The Future

Meet Barry Rodgers, the inspiration behind Foundation For The Future.

You’ve probably met people like Barry Rodgers, but I doubt it.

He could be called a Renaissance Man, but why cut him short.

Although a larger than life figure, he’s a down-to-earth man seeking solutions instead of pointing out faults and assigning blame.

With an impeccable sense of timing Mr. Rodgers launched his online presence the same time Prince William announced finalists for Earthshot 2023.

The heir to the British throne was inspired to launch his environmental scheme by President John F. Kennedy’s “moonshot” speech in 1962 when he tasked the United States to push forward with space exploration.

The competition is based around five “Earthshots” or environmental goals: “Protect and Restore Nature,” “Clean Our Air,” “Revive Our Oceans,” “Build a Waste Free World,” and “Fix Our Climate.” Three finalists are attached to each Earthshot, with one winner per category.

Foundation For The Future arrives in a busy week that includes President Biden’s launch of American Climate Corps.

The American Climate Corps builds on AmeriCorps’ reach and impact in communities most affected by the climate crisis.

By expanding partnerships with federal, tribal, state, and local governments; labor unions; nonprofit organizations; the private sector; and philanthropy, as well as communities traditionally left behind or excluded; the American Climate Corps will look like America and meet the urgent needs of the American people.

A Call To Service For Grassroots Work

My national call to service came with joining the U.S. Army in 1974.

That’s where I learned different communications and accountability.

They were lessons I’ve carried the rest of my life, which is the whole point of proper training.

Drill Sergeants knew their role in communicating Army values. More important, they knew our role too.

Every day was another attack on the accountability we’d grown up with, and we couldn’t argue.

Then we all graduated and saw the bigger picture. There’s always a bigger picture when you open your eyes.

Foundation For the Future brings critical awareness into focus and boomerpdx urges you to stop for a visit.

This blog serves Climate Awareness in art via T.C Boyle’s novel Blue Skies

I’ve seen the world through the lens of nature photographer Charlie Sandbo and PICTURE GREATER.

What I don’t want to see is good people stranded while the lights grow dim around the world.

That’s why I’m making a big ask.

My regular readers have seen no requests for funding, no cash call or donations, for boomerpdx.

What they’ve seen instead is a record of life as I’ve seen it, lived it, and continue to live and see.

My Big Ask:

Show the new kid on the block the power of your attention.

Barry Rodgers is a writer worthy of your time. I will be running his work on a special section of boomerpdx in the near future and beyond.

Far beyond? Let’s hope so.

Leave a comment here, or find Mr. Rodger’s email at the bottom of his page.

WHICH IS OUR FUTURE. ARE WE GOING INTO SPACE OR DO WE JUST FIX THE PLANET WE HAVE NOW?

What’s your grassroots work answer?
