COUNTING YEARS, ADDING TIME

Counting years, birthdays, anniversaries, is easy math even for non-math people.
One day you’re logging miles and running races and getting a new t-shirt.
The world is fresh and waiting for what you have to offer so do your best to show up.
Then the race changes, but the task is the same: show up and do your best.

It’s a different race but still follows step after step.
My six minute mile? Not this day. Not tomorrow, either, but the earlier experience guides this one.

Where’s the finish line?

Counting Dog Years

Nothing shows the march of time better than a puppy.
One day it’s a defiant, arm chewing, wild thing; the next it’s man’s best friend.
I’m as surprised as everyone else that this dog is a happiness machine.
We smile together whether there’s a camera or not.

Do you have a canine companion at home?
The right one makes a big difference in the household.
So does the wrong one, but that’s a different story.
Watching a dog age is counting time speeded up and adding years of happiness. (Hey Sadie, hey Ruby)

It’s Different Than Looking At Parent’s Wedding Pictures

My dad held off on marriage until he made E-5 and got better on-base housing.
That meant sharing half a quonset hut. I’ve had a sharp eye out for quonset huts once I learned that.
What’s a quonset hut? Kind of a half-pipe with the arch up.
Together they built a life together, with my mom working the construction side.
She convinced my dad to leave the Marine Corps, to to college, and get a real job.
And he did it.

I carried the message forward at my last family wedding.
By then I was getting the hang of it.
If I’d had more kids who knows what I’d have come up with.
By the bride and groom’s expression you can tell they were marking time.
I was just getting started when I got the hook.

Do I recommend all parents write a song and play it at their kids’ wedding?
I do now.

PS:

One day time flies, the next it drags along.
The job at hand is moderation, not too fast, not too slow.

PSS:

When timing begins to feel urgent, look for the correct tools to work with it.
Start by marking the day and adding time. (Hey little brother)
Your sense of time isn’t the same as the next person, so you need to connect the dots to find the time.
One of those dots is coming up. Vote like it matters.
