Paris is indeed burning. Vive la France.

They’re not alone.

“France has brought openness and experience in diplomacy, and mutual respect to these talks,” said Stern, one of the world’s leading climate economists. “They have taken great care to make everyone listened to, that they were consulted. There was a great sense of openness, of professional diplomacy, and skill.”

Saturday night was the culmination not only of a fortnight of talks, but of more than 23 years of international attempts under the UN to forge collective action on this global problem. Since 1992, all of the world’s governments had been pledging to take measures that would avoid dangerous warming. Those efforts were marked by discord and failure, the refusal of the biggest emitters to take part, ineffective agreements and ignored treaties.

For these reasons, the Paris talks were widely seen as make-or-break for the UN process. If they failed, collective global efforts would be at an end and the world would be left without a just and robust means of tackling climate change.

Instead of seeing greatness in good works, President Trump still preys on the vulnerable, the weak, the least able to protect themselves. The party he pledges his allegiance to works harder to keep their constituency confused, their mega donors locked in, and the Bible in their back pocket, more than they work for a better America. I congratulate you for not expecting a miracle from a man without the experience of need. His climate change of direction is born of the sort of ignorance that believed in a flat earth, burned witches, and denied the role of science in quality of life. Lucky for the rest of us, we have Paris.)

Donald Trump is not Caligula, so you’ve got that going for you. He may not be a demon from the past, but he’s got his own problems just the same. This is a large older man who refuses to stand up for the little man, but somehow convinces them he’s on their side, one of them.

This quickly aging President makes promises, states facts, issues the sort of proclamations you’ve heard from more recent Italian leaders like Il Duce. While I’m sorry to bring up your sordid past, America is working on it’s modern equivalent. How do we explain the likes of Trump to Italy? Maybe you can explain Caligula to Trump. Call it a wash.
