When They Complain About Boomers, It’s All About Mommy And Daddy? Maybe Not.

It’s time to get used to the kids ranting about their parents. For now it’s Millennials vs Baby Boomers.

Your kids have you in their crosshairs.

From numbers alone, they win. Boomers come in at 79 million; Millennials tip the scales at 80 million, the biggest generation in the history of America.

Who saw this coming?

Are you ready for young punks dressed in their casual Friday gear, their off-duty blazers and jeans and Brooks Brother shirts?

The New Normal: Same As It Ever Was.

Now we’ll be exposed to another wave of youngsters navigating fame and fortune in starched collars. David and his cohorts will show us how they deal with the facts of aging.

If the past is any indicator, some Millennials will get fat, lose their hair, and date younger women dazed by their brilliance. It worked for Henry Kissinger, President Nixon’s babe magnet.

The Phoenix Business Journal ran a post about Millennials and the housing market future. One of their experts heard this: “adolescence starts at 12 and ends at 35.”

Were they talking about Millennials or the Boomers who call sixty the new forty? Here at BoomerPDX we call it like we see it. Sixty is sixty in the old math and the new. Why sugar coat a number?

Imagine what forty looks like to a twenty four year old.

If the new Biggest Generation In History settles in Arizona, they’ll look sixty before they’re thirty in that sun. Listen to daddy and wear a hat and plenty of sun screen, kids.

What they don’t get is where Boomers started, and the idea of a recycled life.

History Repeats. Lessons Learned?

No generation came of age under more scrutiny than Baby Boomers. That happens with parents and elders who left the battlefield with victories over Nazi Germany and the Pearl Harbor sneak attacking Japanese.

Millennial parents don’t have a similar hook to hang their hat, but they remember the sting of, “Here’s what we did. What have you done,” from the Greatest Generation and the Silent Generation.

History seems to run in cycles. The older you get, the better you see. Maybe it’s a right turn to cynicism, but the Millennial bashers sound like the old folks who bashed them and they’re passing it along.

My dad went to Korea to face the North Koreans and Chinese. Boomers before me went to Vietnam. Millennials went to Iraq and Afghanistan. None of them are vacation hot spots where you’d want a time-share.

Every generation earns its way. They all have a reason to complain, but if we stick together, if we avoid the hostile clash Boomers faced in their twenties, then the future isn’t so bleak.
