BIG BROTHER WORK NEVER ENDS

Big brother comes in a variety of shapes and sizes.

A good big brother can be a guiding light.

Growing up with someone who knows their role can set the stage for a good life.

On the other hand? Roles can change.

Imagine an All-State high school football player with younger brothers following his footsteps.

A good big brother takes the lead, showing the others what it takes to succeed.

Keep your grades up to stay eligible.

Eat right to stay strong.

Lift weights to be competitive.

Run for conditioning.

A good big brother takes his younger siblings under his wing and pulls them along in his wake.

How do they learn how to do this?

They have a father and a mother who lead by example.

Or they have a father-figure who takes time with them. A coach, a teacher, one of their dad’s friends.

They are the wind beneath our wings.

Big Brother Authority

More often that not people hear the words ‘big brother’ and they go right to Orwell.

The novel tells the story of Winston Smith, a hapless middle-aged bureaucrat who lives in Oceania, where he is governed by constant surveillance. Even though there are no laws, there is a police force, the “Thought Police,” and the constant reminders, on posters, that “Big Brother Is Watching You.” 

Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, and his job is to rewrite the reports in newspapers of the past to conform with the present reality. Smith lives in a constant state of uncertainty; he is not sure the year is in fact 1984.

The big brother I’m talking about is a big helper, not some informant.

They make life easier and more productive for others living in the same house.

Instead of a mean looking rat bastard they are a confidant, a colleague, a fellow striver who takes joy in family accomplishments.

The Other Kind Of Brother

Who remembers a kid when they were growing up who couldn’t wait to move out of their house.

All they wanted to do was get to their eighteenth birthday and leave.

No time for domestic routines or helping out.

Every morning was a day closer to their big goal of independence.

Whether a big brother or little brother, their most common characteristic was being a pain in the ass.

No guys wanted to hang out with them because they were such a downer, trash talking their family, their school, their town.

No girls wanted to date them because they didn’t want to be seen with ‘that guy.’

They showed no loyalty, no faith, no belief.

Their world was a pile of shit and they couldn’t wait to scrape it off their shoes.

No one else shared their opinion.

Then they went out into the real world and found out what was what.

Big Sister

No matter who comes after them, big sister is the boss.

They know how things are, how they should be, and what to do to get there.

Big Sister is the daughter every family needs.

She may not be easy, but consider what she has to work with.
