FEELING JAMMED FOR TIME? AND EVERYTHING ELSE

I’m feeling jammed for time when I hear this in my brain:
“I’m late, I’m late! For a very important date! No time to say ‘hello, goodbye,’ I’m late, I’m late, I’m late!”
“Be  On  Time,” is my mantra. I’m saying it right now.
(beontime beontime beontime)
Can’t hurt but,  ??????

MICRO MEMOIR II: LEAVING TOWN CHRISTMAS PARTY

Leaving town used to be easy, if I remember right.
Pack a bag, get in a car, hop on bus, and leave.
“I’ll be there in a few days.”
Same story going out to Brooklyn as leaving:

LEAVING TOWN IN THE 70’S, A MICRO MEMOIR

When you say you’re leaving town for good it doesn’t start with a packed bag.
You need to let the landlord know, the boss know, your friends.
The best town I ever left was the Brooklyn borough of New York City.
See ya, suckers.

TOYOTA HIGHLANDER FOR LIFE?

I owned a Toyota Highlander, but it didn’t start that way.
Somehow the wife and I went to a car dealership traded a van and ended up with a Rav4.
She decided it was the worst car ever since I insisted on the barebones cheapest version.
By the time we got home I knew it was going back.
But . . .

CIVIL WAR CLOSE UP

How often have you seen a movie like Civil War in iMax and got closeups of the stars.
Oppenheimer did it with detailed inspection of faces from about an inch away.
I’m fan of movie stars in all their glory, but do we need the dermatology exam camera work?
That’s the visual effect of the people; the storytelling is another, well, story.

MILLENNIAL SELF CARE = SELF RESPONSIBILITY

You know it’s not pledge week when NPR rags millennials about ‘self-care.’ Instead of pledging money to them, they’ll buy an ‘experience’ instead. Cue Jimi Hendrix? Gracy Obuchowicz says it’s more than just social media that has pushed millennials to the forefront of the self-care discussion. “Our generation has seen enough,” she said. “People […]

VETERAN SOLUTIONS FOR VETERAN PROBLEMS

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of veteran problems. The biggest veteran problems come when those who served say, “I didn’t sign up for this.” What is the ‘this’ in “I didn’t sign up for this?” The ‘this’ veterans talk about is the hard part for non-veterans to understand. Even veterans of […]

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT OSCAR GOES TO?

Who deserves the Oscar for the Affordable Care Act? Health insurance used to be simple when I was young. At least it seemed simple. Mom and Dad took me to the doctor when things looked funky, like my collarbone. Things break on kids, like bones when they fly through the air and land awkwardly. Have […]

Average American Man = Fat?

This is what it looks like my boomers. Average American from The Atlantic. The artist compares Average American, named Todd, to other countries. Do you agree with this interpretation, or is there something missing?

CANCER ROOM: BEST OF TIMES, WORST OF TIMES

The biggest motivation for writing a cancer room memoir like ‘LICKING CANCER, The Full Response’ is paying tribute to the people I met in there.   From staff to patients, it’s a team focused on the same goal, until it goes off the tracks, and it does in one way or the other for everyone. […]

To: COMMANDER, NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS, VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS

Baby boomers know how to move on. We’ve seen hippies turn into businessmen, radicals to politicians, yippies into stock brokers. We’ve seen our soldiers come back from Vietnam and work to regain missing years. The following two letters come from an American veteran. He served on the Korean DMZ. Thomas Lucken, like thousands of other […]

THE TICKING BABY BOOMERS

We didn’t start the fire? Maybe, but ticking baby boomers sure throw on the logs. A recent statement about relationships explains how you should never let others know what makes you tick. Why? If they know how you tick, they’ll wind you up on their schedule. Sounds stressful, like a hidden life with those who […]

BABY BOOMERS ENJOY HOT YEARS HOLDING ONTO THINGS

First we Hold Onto Things to stand up, then Hold Onto Things to stay up. Hot sounds good. A hot dinner. A hot rod. A hot shot. Hot is a difference maker. Hot is cool, until it’s not. Growing up baby boomer was cool when the Sixties were hot, but how cool could you be […]

GOOD ENOUGH YET?

When ‘getting over it’ isn’t good enough. It all sounds the same. Get over it. Move on. Turn the page. Maybe you say it to yourself, maybe you hear it from others. If it’s others giving the push, you know what they’re really saying? You’re a whiner. In blogger land it’s whining about SEO, traffic, […]

BOOMER ON

YOU KNOW THE SAME FRIENDS AND LIKE THE SAME PLACES Ed, one of the most transcendent of Portland baby boomers, carried the room at a local bar. He whipped out a micro-laptop the way Elvis played guitar and he spun a web connecting the past, present, and future in his perfect boomer business style. The beer in his pint […]

OREGON NIGHT LIGHT NECKLACE FOR CAUTIOUS SEA CAPTAINS, AND YOU

One picture doesn’t do the Oregon Night Light Necklace justice But here it is according to a State Park sign. Click the pics for full size. It’s a cool light house map on a big screen. Now imagine yourself on a wooden sailboat exploring another poorly mapped coast line. Another chance to crash on the […]

BOOMERPDX ON THE ROAD TRAVEL ADVICE

How To Find Places To Stay On The Road. If two people travel together, one is planner. They’ve got the calendar, the days, the stops, and how long you’ll be in each place. Two planners are a problem. With two planners it won’t be a trip, it’ll be a hostage negotiation where one or both […]

SEATTLE WORKS HARD FOR THE TOP SPOT

A money man gave me the short history of how important places draw the right people to them, how they work. In the emerging Industrial Revolution world London was the center of the universe. Anyone with dreams and aspirations of being somebody, of one day being The Man, moved to London. Things changed […]
